Aims: The surgical options for patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the patellofemoral joint (PFJ) involve a patellofemoral joint arthroplasty (PFA) or a total knee arthroplasy (TKA). The aim of this study was to describe and compare the safety profile and risk of revision of these two procedures.
Methods: The records of patients from the UK National Joint Registry who underwent PFA or TKA between April 2003 and December 2021 were linked to the Hospital Episode Statistics database.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the cost-effectiveness of total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) and hemiarthroplasty (HA) and explore variation by age and gender.
Design: Cost-effectiveness analysis using a lifetime cohort Markov model.
Setting: National population registry data.
Introduction: This systematic review attempts to address survivorship of patellofemoral joint replacements, with conversion to a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) as an endpoint.
Methods: Survival estimates from multiple case series and national registries were pooled to calculate survival at 5, 10, 15 and 20 years, respectively. As a secondary outcome, the type and number of complications were recorded.
Aims: While cementless fixation offers potential advantages over cemented fixation, such as a shorter operating time, concerns linger over its higher cost and increased risk of periprosthetic fractures. If the risk of fracture can be forecasted, it would aid the shared decision-making process related to cementless stems. Our study aimed to develop and validate predictive models of periprosthetic femoral fracture (PPFF) necessitating revision and reoperation after elective total hip arthroplasty (THA).

Aims: As an increasing number of female surgeons are choosing orthopaedics, it is important to recognize the impact of pregnancy within this cohort. The aim of this review was to examine common themes and data surrounding pregnancy, parenthood, and fertility within orthopaedics.
Methods: A systematic review was conducted by searching Medline, Emcare, Embase, PsycINFO, OrthoSearch, and the Cochrane Library in November 2022.
Aims: This study investigates the use of the metabolic equivalent of task (MET) score in a young hip arthroplasty population, and its ability to capture additional benefit beyond the ceiling effect of conventional patient-reported outcome measures.
Methods: From our electronic database of 751 hip arthroplasty procedures, 221 patients were included. Patients were excluded if they had revision surgery, an alternative hip procedure, or incomplete data either preoperatively or at one-year follow-up.
The main indications for osteochondral allografts (OCA) transplantation of the knee are the following: Symptomatic full-thickness cartilage lesions greater than 3 cm; deep lesions with subchondral damage; and revision techniques when a previous surgical procedure has failed. Dowel and shell techniques are the two most commonly used for OCA transplantation. The dowel technique is appropriate in most cartilage lesions; however, geometrically irregular lesions may need the shell technique.

Methods: In total, 54,215 UKRs and 54,215 TKRs from the National Joint Registry and Hospital Episode Statistics database were propensity score matched and Kaplan-Meier and regression analysis used to compare revision, reoperation, mortality, and 3-month complications.
Aims: Joint registries classify all further arthroplasty procedures to a knee with an existing partial arthroplasty as revision surgery, regardless of the actual procedure performed. Relatively minor procedures, including bearing exchanges, are classified in the same way as major operations requiring augments and stems. A new classification system is proposed to acknowledge and describe the detail of these procedures, which has implications for risk, recovery, and health economics.
