Unlabelled: Previous studies show osteoporosis causes tibial varus in knee osteoarthritis patients. Our analysis of tibial plateau specimens from osteoarthritic patients reveals that osteoporosis accelerates the deterioration of the subchondral microstructure of the tibial plateau, exacerbating tibial varus.

Introduction: The relationship between osteoporosis (OP) and knee osteoarthritis (OA) has garnered significant clinical interest, particularly regarding the prevalence of tibial varus in patients suffering from both conditions.

Background: Environmental pollutants, particularly from air pollution and tobacco smoke, have emerged as significant risk factors. Benzopyrene (BaP), a Group 1 carcinogen, is ubiquitously present in these pollutants, yet its molecular mechanisms in periodontitis remain largely unexplored.

Methods: We investigated these mechanisms through an integrated approach combining network toxicology, machine learning, and molecular docking analyses.

Lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) is one of the most common subtype of lung cancer and is associated with the poor prognoses. The fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) family is known to be activated through fusions with various partners across multiple cancer types, including nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC). FGFR inhibitors are currently undergoing clinical evaluation for the treatment of tumors harboring these fusions.

Aim: To study the effect and elucidate the underlying mechanisms of VDAC1-ΔC on autophagy in renal tubular epithelial cells injured by hypoxia/reoxygenation.

Methods: C57/BL6 mice were randomly divided into groups: sham operation group, IRI 1d group and IRI 2d group. The inner canthal blood of mice was collected to detect the levels of serum creatinine and urea nitrogen and kidney tissues were sampled, and sections were stained with Periodic acid-Schiff for morphological evaluation.

Introduction: Salidroside (SAL), extracted from Rhodiola rosea, has been widely used in coronary heart disease and myocardial ischemia for decades. Previous studies have demonstrated that SAL could reduce arteriosclerosis, and thus combat ischemic brain damage. However, the in-depth function of the salidroside in Cerebral Small Vascular Disease (CSVD) has not been discovered, and related molecular mechanism is still unclear.

The mining and smelting of manganese ores and the accumulation of slag not only pollute the environment and increase the threat to biodiversity, but also adversely affect the health of human and other organisms. Therefore, it's important to study the restoration of manganese mining area. Since mosses play an irreplaceable role in the ecological restoration of mine sites, this study is carried out in a slag heap area that has been in continuous operation for about 50 years, and spatial variation is used instead of temporal variation to study the diversity of moss plants, the characteristics of soil heavy metal changes under moss cover, and the characteristics of bacterial communities in manganese mine sites at different time scales.

An anticorrosive coating with randomly distributed passive barriers and regionally enriched active corrosion inhibitors is developed by integrating mica nanosheets (MNSs) and magnetic-responsive core-shell mesoporous nanoparticles with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (FeO@mSiO/MBT) under magnetic field incubation. The bottom enriched FeO@mSiO/MBT rapidly releases the MBT to form a passivation layer on corrosion sites, enhancing the corrosion inhibition efficiency by 30.36% compared with the control (NPEP-R).

African ostrich chicks (Struthio camelus) were divided into six groups, and each received different levels of boric acid (source of boron) in the drinking water (0, 40, 80, 160, 320, and 640 mg/L respectively) to examine the histological, apoptotic, biochemical, and transcriptomic parameters. Morphological analysis in different groups was assessed by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, periodic acid Schiff (PAS) staining, and terminal deoxynucleotide transferase dUTP Nick-End Labeling (TUNEL) assay. The biochemical profile was evaluated spectrophotometrically.

Based on the context of communication and use of online communities in China, this study explored the characteristics and defects of risk communication of the government and official media in the event of COVID-19, as well as the factors that affected people's perception of the risk and protective behavior. The following results were found: (1) The government and official (mainstream) media accounts suffered from information lag in the early stage of COVID-19, while self-media accounts played the role of risk sensors, which caused people to have less trust in the government and the authorities and turn to the truth on self-media accounts. However, the low accessibility of self-media accounts and the imperfect check mechanism provided a hotbed for rumors, which further led to more fear and worry about risks.

With the increasing number of cancer survivors, the question of how to coexist with cancer has become more and more pressing. This research uses a mutual help WeChat group organized by cancer patients as the research field to observe the daily interactions of cancer patients, so as to improve understanding of how social media technology can help cancer patients in the treatment and recovery process. The study found that the WeChat group is the main source of health knowledge for the participating cancer patients, and that when compared to traditional web-based patient mutual aid communities, the WeChat group is a more timely, popular, continuous, and accurate source of information.

Article Synopsis
  • Drip irrigation combined with film mulching is becoming popular in arid regions, but leftover plastic film can affect water movement in the soil.
  • Structural equation modeling was used to assess how residual plastic film (RPF) and emitter flow rate (FR) influence water wetting front movement and soil infiltration characteristics.
  • The findings indicated that high RPF hinders water movement, increasing the wetting front migration time, while specific emitter flow rates can optimize water infiltration in RPF-affected soils.

Background: A comprehensive evaluation of the burden of injury is an important foundation for selecting and formulating strategies of injury prevention. We present results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 of non-fatal and fatal outcomes of injury at the national and subnational level, and the changes in burden for key causes of injury over time in China.

Methods: Using the methods and results from GBD 2017, we describe the burden of total injury and the key causes of injury based on the rates of incidence, cause-specific mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in China estimated using DisMod-MR 2.

The objective of this study was to investigate the role of miR-148a-3p in lupus nephritis (LN) based on data from previous studies and a microRNA assay. We evaluated the miR-148a-3p expression level in LN renal tissues and blood serum to determine its clinicopathological significance and effect on glomerular cell proliferation. Then, we collected renal glomeruli from LN mice and determined the miR-148a-3p, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), and PCNA/Thy1 expression.

In order to obtain lipid producing strain with high-yield, the wild type stain Rhodotorula glutinis was treated by low ion implantation, and optimization of fermentation medium for higher lipid yield was carried out using mutant strain. It was found that the strain had a higher positive mutation rate when the output power was 10 keV and the dose of N(+) implantation was 80 × 2.6 × 10(13) ions/cm(2).

In the rumen bacteria, ammonia as the end product of nitrogen is incorporated into carbon skeleton (α-ketoglutarate) to yield glutamine and glutamate which are important nitrogen donors in nitrogenous compounds metabolism in cells. The enzymes glutamine synthetase, glutamate synthetase, and glutamate dehydrogenase are involved in these processes. Some experimental results have proven that the global nitrogen regulation system may participate in the regulation of assimilation of ammonia in rumen bacteria.

Previous studies have suggested that prenatal exposure to nicotine is associated with abnormal development in fetuses, including fetal brain damage. The present study determined the effect of maternal administration of nicotine during different gestational periods on brain nicotine receptor subunits in fetal rats. Subcutaneous injections of nicotine in maternal rats from the early and middle gestation decreased fetal blood PO2, increased fetal blood PCO2 and hemoglobin, and decreased fetal brain weight.
