Excessive production of trimethylamine (TMA) by the gut microbiota leads to increased concentrations of TMA or trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) in the bloodstream, which is associated with health risks. High levels of TMAO have been linked to cardiovascular disease, inflammation and other health problems. In addition, people affected by a genetic deficiency of the liver enzyme FMO3, which oxidises TMA to TMAO, suffer from trimethylaminuria (TMAU), a rare disorder caused by mutations in the Fmo3 gene, in which the body odour resembles that of rotting fish, leading to significant discomfort and social isolation.

Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences, University of Messina, Messina 98122, Italy; Dipartimento di Biotecnologie Marine Ecosostenibili, Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Napoli 80121, Italy. Electronic address:

The continuous increase in the concentration of heavy metals in bodies of water due to human activity poses a serious threat to the sustainability and overall health of the ecosystem. This study investigated the essential and toxic elements bioaccumulation in various tissues (gills, muscles, liver, and brain) of the Minor carp (Labeo gonius) from two sampling sites of highly polluted Khushab Lake, a tributary of River Jhelum (in the Pakistan's Punjab province), along with a less exposed reference site (Chashma Lake-less polluted site). The impacts of pollution on the health profile of the fish were assessed using multiple biomarkers for analysis.

Iodine is the most potent antiseptic agent used in clinical applications, but its volatility and toxicity are serious drawbacks that are stimulating the search of new strategies to achieve formulations stable at low iodine concentration. Here, we report that polycationic micellar aggregates, formed by the self-assembling of the amphiphilic choline-calix[4]arene derivative (CholCalix) in aqueous medium, are able to complex triiodide anions (I) both in solution and in solid phase. This novel iodophor enhances the stability of 0.

Introduction: Flexible bronchoscopy (FB) is widely used for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in pulmonary medicine. However, FB can cause respiratory and haemodynamic complications, especially in patients with pre-existing lung and/or cardiovascular comorbidities. Despite the range of oxygenation and ventilatory approaches available to prevent these risks, evidence regarding their real-world application and clinical impact is limited.

Photodynamic diagnosis (PDD) significantly enhances the detection of bladder cancer (BCa) and is able to reduce the risk of disease recurrence, although it may not affect disease progression and mortality rates. Despite its advantages, widespread adoption of PDD is limited by cost considerations and the absence of unified guidelines on its application, highlighting the need for continued evaluation of its cost-effectiveness across different healthcare settings. To date, no specific recommendations for PDD in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) management have been provided by the Italian Society of Urology (Società Italiana di Urologia, SIU).

The gut microbiota is recognized as one of the most complex microbial ecosystems in mammals. In pigs, the structure of this microbial community significantly influences their overall physiological functions, with breed also contributing to its diversity. This study explores the potential differences in the bacterial composition of the faecal microbiota between two pig breeds: the autochthonous Nero Siciliano (NS) and a commercial crossbreed (CB) (Landrace × Large White).

Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences (CHIBIOFARAM), University of Messina, Viale Ferdinando D'Alcontres 13, I-98166 Messina, Italy.

Sigma (σ) receptors (SRs) have emerged as important therapeutic targets due to their roles in various biological pathways. They are classified into two subtypes: S1R, primarily distributed in the central nervous system and related to neuroprotection and neurodegenerative diseases, and S2R mainly expressed in cancer cells and associated with cell proliferation and apoptosis, as well as in neurons. Although S1R and S2R exhibit structural differences in receptor architecture and assembly, they share similar binding site features and ligand recognition mechanisms.

Background: Fishes are key components of the megafauna of the deep sea, and evolutionary adaptations to deep-sea life appear to have occurred independently in at least 22 fish orders. In this context, the analysis of even more fish genomes and mitogenomes has fundamental importance, providing a valuable resource for understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying evolutionary adaptation, especially to extreme environments such as the deep sea. Here, we report the first complete mitochondrial genome of Zu cristatus (Bonelli, 1819), providing essential information on its structure and phylogeny.
