As masculinities are changing, taking a social identity perspective on men and their relations with others helps to understand how men navigate their social world. Combining this with other common approaches in the psychology of gender, men, and masculinities, we review how such a perspective helps to understand men's differing health and well-being outcomes, work/family choices, and their responses to changing gender relations and other social developments (privilege, threat, allyship). In so doing, we emphasize that men's audiences (i.

Clinical care of family members of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy.

Eur Heart J

September 2025

Heart Failure and Inherited Cardiac Diseases Unit, Department of Cardiology, Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro IDIPHISA, Manuel de Falla, 2, Madrid 28222, Spain.

Genetic family screening following the detection of a pathogenic or likely pathogenic variant in a proband with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) remains one of the main applications of genetic testing. While cardiac screening is recommended for all first-degree relatives, the a priori risk among family members varies. Consequently, screening regimens should be tailored according to both genetic and clinical information at the individual and familial level.

Introduction: The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the scientific process is advancing at a remarkable speed, thanks to continued innovations in large language models. While AI provides widespread benefits, including editing for fluency and clarity, it also has drawbacks, including fabricated content, perpetuation of bias, and lack of accountability. The editorial board of (RAPM) therefore sought to develop best practices for AI usage and disclosure.

Renal impairment is considered a contra-indication for lung (LTX) or combined heart-lung (HLTX) transplantation due to increased mortality. We hypothesized that renal impairment in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is the result of reduced cardiac output and should be partly reversible after LTX. We performed a retrospective analysis in 67 consecutive PAH and CTEPH patients who underwent (H)LTX, to investigate the postoperative evolution of renal function in function of baseline renal function using a mixed model effect test.

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension requires referral to an expert center for final diagnosis and assessment of treatment possibilities by a multidisciplinary team. Pulmonary endarterectomy is the only potentially curative therapy and therefore remains the treatment of choice. However, many practices and minor technical aspects of this procedure may still provoke controversy.

Harbingers of infectious viral pandemics, such as the H1N1 influenza, SARS, Zika, Ebola, MERS, and SARS-CoV-2, caused major outbreaks in the first two decades of the 21st century. Despite warnings, therapeutic tools that could be rapidly and sustainably scaled at a global level when SARS-CoV-2 emerged were lacking. Small-molecule antivirals can play a crucial role in both individual patient care and broader public health strategies for controlling and mitigating the impact of viral diseases.

Background: It has been argued that disruptions to epistemic trust are implicated in psychopathology; however, this requires empirical testing, and an existing scale evaluating epistemic trust, the Epistemic Trust, Mistrust and Credulity Questionnaire (ETMCQ), requires improvement.

Aims: This study tested a revised version of the Epistemic Trust, Mistrust and Credulity Questionnaire (the ETMCQ-R), examining the strength of associations between the updated scale and mental health symptoms, epistemic vice, psychological resilience, perceived social support, attachment style, history of childhood adversity and an experimental measure of trust, and epistemic stance as a mediator between adversity and psychopathology.

Method: Using an online survey design, 525 participants completed the ETMCQ-R alongside other measures.

Background: Small airways dysfunction (SAD) is an important treatable trait in persistent asthma but remains poorly captured by conventional spirometry. The (FEV3-FEV1)/FVC and FEV3/FEV6 ratios have been proposed as novel markers of peripheral airflow limitation.

Objective: We investigated the relationship between (FEV3-FEV1)/FVC and FEV3/FEV6 with symptom control and severe exacerbation frequency in patients with moderate-to-severe asthma.

Synaptic dysfunction is a hallmark of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), often linked to genes involved in cytoskeletal regulation. While the role of these genes has been extensively studied in neurons, microglial functions such as phagocytosis are also dependent on cytoskeletal dynamics. We demonstrate that disturbance of actin cytoskeletal regulation in microglia, modeled by genetically impairing the scaffold protein Disrupted-in-Schizophrenia 1 (DISC1), which integrates actin-binding proteins, causes a shift in actin regulatory balance favoring filopodial versus lamellipodial actin organization.

Introduction: In Acute Ischemic Stroke (AIS), mismatch between Diffusion-Weighted Imaging (DWI) and Fluid-Attenuated Inversion-Recovery (FLAIR) helps identify patients who can benefit from thrombolysis when stroke onset time is unknown (15% of AIS). However, visual assessment has suboptimal observer agreement. Our study aims to develop and validate a Deep-Learning model for predicting DWI-FLAIR mismatch using solely DWI data.

Music as Fluidum: A Rheological Approach to the Materiality of Sound as Movement Through Time.

Behav Sci (Basel)

August 2025

Musicology Research Group, Faculty of Arts, KU Leuven-University of Leuven, 3000 Leuven, Belgium.

Music is an elusive phenomenon with sounds that disappear while sounding. This challenges the description of the music and its processing by the listener or performer. A possible answer to this problem lies in the definition of music as flowing sound energy that continuously modifies its substance and shape.

Background: Ultrasonography is the primary diagnostic imaging modality for upper extremity deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) related to peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICCs). Computed tomography (CT) venography may offer higher sensitivity, while additionally providing information about the superior vena cava and central pulmonary arteries.

Purpose: We compared the diagnostic accuracy of CT venography with ultrasonography for screen-detected PICC-related venous thromboembolism (VTE).

Consistency in treatment effects and statistical significance between early-stage pregnancy endpoints and live birth in randomized controlled trials of infertility: a systematic meta-epidemiological study.

Fertil Steril

August 2025

Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Monash University, Clayton, VIC 3168, Australia; Aberdeen Centre for Women's Health Research, School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, UK.

Importance: Live births are the 'gold standard' for assessing infertility treatments but are less frequently reported than clinical pregnancy. Identifying approaches to interpret randomized controlled trials (RCTs) without live birth data is essential.

Objective: To evaluate the correlation between treatment effects and the consistency of statistical significance in conclusions drawn from live birth versus early-stage pregnancy endpoints (an umbrella term defined as biochemical, clinical, or ongoing pregnancy) in RCTs reporting both outcomes.
