Rapid strides in portable electronics and telecommunication technologies have sharply escalated the demand for high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials that effectively suppress secondary electromagnetic pollution while simultaneously integrating thermal management. Here an innovative, lightweight, hierarchical triple-layer aerogel structure comprising nickel (Ni) foam (NiF), titanium carbonitride (TiCNT) MXene, and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), fabricated via a facile, one-step bidirectional freeze-casting process is presented. This asymmetric aerogel architecture strategically employs an impedance-matching MXene/PVA top layer for optimized microwave entry, a NiF/MXene/PVA interlayer introducing magnetic loss and enhancing heat conduction, and a reflective, thermally foamed MXene bottom layer promoting internal reflection for superior energy absorption.

In the field of conservation physiology, there is often a trade off between conducting research in controlled laboratory settings or in inherently variable field environments. However, this belief sets up a false dichotomy where laboratory experiments are perceived as providing precise, mechanistic understanding with low variability at the cost of environmental realism while field studies are ecologically relevant but criticized for generating inconsistent evidence that is difficult to interpret and replicate. Despite the perceived binary view, these approaches are not in opposition to one another, but rather form a continuum along increasing ecological complexity.

Renal oncocytomas are benign renal tumours characterized by a central stellate scar that are indistinguishable on CT/MR imaging from malignant chromophobe renal cell carcinomas (ChrRCCs). Renal oncocytomas and ChrRCCs can be separate entities but can also co-exist on a spectrum in hybrid oncocytic/ chromophobe tumours. In the past, invasive biopsy and pathologic diagnosis has been relied on to differentiate these lesion and direct management.

Permafrost thaw in peatlands risks increasing the production and mobilization of methylmercury (MeHg), a bioaccumulative neurotoxin that poses a health hazard to humans. We studied 12 peatlands on a trophic gradient in northwestern Canada, including permafrost peat plateaus and thawed bogs and fens, to determine the effects of thaw on MeHg production from measures of soil and porewater MeHg and in situ methylation assays. The production of MeHg was greater in thawed peatlands, especially rich fens, as indicated by higher potential rates of microbial methylation of inorganic mercury (Hg) to MeHg and higher soil %MeHg (MeHg:total Hg).

Microsporidia are emerging opportunistic pathogens in immunosuppressed individuals, including solid organ transplant recipients. We present a case of tubulointerstitial nephritis (TIN) caused by Microsporidia infection in a 55-year-old male who underwent combined liver-kidney transplantation (CLKT) for metabolic-associated fatty liver disease and end-stage kidney disease. The patient developed diarrhoea, abdominal bloating and acute kidney injury (AKI) 1 month post-transplant.

The global aging population is rapidly increasing, and the prevalence of age-related cognitive conditions, such as mild cognitive impairment (MCI), is becoming more common. This condition, which represents intermediate stages between normal aging and dementia, underscores the importance of early detection and timely intervention to address the growing demand for health services. Traditional cognitive assessments have limitations, such as the consistency of results, prompting the need for innovative technology-based solutions.

Adsorption of asphaltenes onto mineral solids contributes to fouling, scaling, and plugging issues in the oil industry. Among asphaltene subfractions, those with strong oil/water interfacial activity are expected to possess superior adsorption abilities on mineral surfaces. In this study, interfacially non-active (INAA) and active (IAA) fractions were separated from whole asphaltenes.

Effective marine conservation and fisheries management require long-term monitoring. Traditional metrics, such as species richness, abundance and diversity indices, are typically used to describe changes in community structure; however, these do not account for species' functional roles and their contribution to ecosystem processes. In this study, we investigated changes in functional diversity (FD) of fish species in a UK temperate coastal ecosystem at both the community and species levels from 1988 to 2023, using scientific trawl surveys.

Despite remarkable advances in diagnostics, pharmacotherapy, and transplantation, conventional hepatology often falls short in addressing the persistent symptoms, impaired quality of life, and broader health needs of people living with chronic liver disease. Integrative Hepatology-rooted in the principles of integrative medicine-offers a holistic, evidence-informed approach that combines conventional hepatology with complementary modalities to address the biological, nutritional, physical, psychosocial, behavioral, and environmental determinants of liver health. This framework emphasizes multimodal, patient-centered care aimed at improving both liver-specific and overall health outcomes.

The therapeutic value of antiviral nucleoside analogs was highlighted during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, with remdesivir and molnupiravir repurposed for their broad-spectrum antiviral activity. The cytidine analog azvudine (FNC) has recently gained attention as a potential treatment for human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Considering the distinct substrate specificities of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) and SARS-CoV-2 RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), a unifying mechanism of inhibition remains elusive.
