Doxorubicin (DOX), an effective chemotherapeutic drug, has been used to treat various cancers; however, its cardiotoxic side effects restrict its therapeutic efficacy. Fisetin, a flavonoid phytoestrogen derived from a range of fruits and vegetables, has been reported to exert cardioprotective effects against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated fisetin's cardioprotective role and mechanism against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity in H9c2 cardiomyoblasts and ovariectomized (OVX) rat models.

The objective of this cohort study was to evaluate the association between the frequency of hospital admissions and disease activity, as defined by two different disease activity measurements: the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Score (SLE-DAS) and the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2K), in adult patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLEs). Patients with SLE were recruited from the rheumatology outpatient department of a regional hospital in southern Taiwan. SLE-DAS and SLEDAI-2K were used to define SLE disease activity and the cause of hospital admissions was identified by a rheumatologist based on medical records.

Fibroblast-like synoviocytes accumulation, proliferation and activation, and the subsequent inflammatory mediators production play a key role in the progression of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It is well established that Janus kinase 2/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (JAK2/STAT3) signaling triggers inflammation, and induces cytokine levels in RA. Ohwia caudata have long been used against many disorders.

Objective: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are frequently used as the first-line agents for the symptomatic relief of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but it may insidiously provoke the onset of renal diseases, especially chronic kidney disease (CKD). While Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has become an increasingly popular adjunctive therapy among RA groups, there are currently no available data on the effect of CHM use towards risk of CKD. This study aimed to explore on a population-level whether CHM use decreases sequent CKD risk among them.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a worldwide health threat that has long-term effects on the patients and there is currently no efficient cure prescribed for the treatment and the prolonging effects. Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) have been reported to exert therapeutic effect against COVID-19. In this study, the therapeutic effects of Jing Si herbal tea (JSHT) against COVID-19 infection and associated long-term effects were evaluated in different in vitro and in vivo models.

: Sjögren's Syndrome (SS) is a common extra-articular feature among subjects with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). While Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has been used to treat symptoms of RA for many years, few studies have examined its efficacy in guarding against the SS onset. This study aimed to compare risk of SS for RA patients with and without use of CHM.

Background/aim: Postoperative adverse events are associated with poor clinical outcomes and survival in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with curative operation. However, comprehensive evaluation of the clinical characteristics associated with postoperative adverse events and survival outcomes is lacking.
Patients And Methods: A retrospective study that evaluated patients with NSCLC who underwent curative surgery between 2008 and 2019 was conducted in a medical center.

Background/aim: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a major cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality. Metformin is a widely used medication and may have additional benefits beyond glycemic control. Liraglutide, a novel treatment for diabetes and obesity, also has beneficial effects on non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

Introduction: A negative association between C-terminal fibroblast growth factor 23 (cFGF23) and hemoglobin (Hb) levels has been reported in patients with predialysis chronic kidney disease. In dialysis patients, the dominant form of serum FGF23 is intact FGF23 (iFGF23); however, its association with the Hb level remains unclear. Therefore, simultaneously monitoring iFGF23 and cFGF23 levels is crucial.

This paper discusses the feasibility of a monitoring program for the quality assurance status of activity meters. We sent a questionnaire to clinical nuclear medicine departments of medical institutions, requesting information on their activity meters and quality assurance practices. On-site visits were conducted with exemption-level standard sources (Co-57, Cs-137 and Ba-133) for dose calibrators in nuclear medicine departments including physical inspection, accuracy and reproducibility.

Previous research has reported an association between life satisfaction, self-esteem, and volunteering. However, it is unclear whether self-esteem is associated with life satisfaction in older adults who are already engaged in volunteering. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the association between life satisfaction and self-esteem in older adults who were formally volunteering at a non-governmental organization in Taiwan.

Impacts caused by cancer and associated treatment may change with time. The objective of this study is to examine the change trajectory of symptom distress, coping strategies, and spiritual wellbeing in colorectal cancer patients during chemotherapy and to further examine the predictors of spiritual wellbeing. A prospective longitudinal repeated measures study design was employed.

Resistance to chemotherapy is the deadlock in cancer treatment. In this study, we used wild-type LOVO (LOVO ), a human colon cancer cell line, and the oxaliplatin-resistant sub-clone LOVO cells to investigate the molecular mechanisms of the development of drug resistance in colon cancer. Compared with LOVO cells, LOVO cells had a high proliferation capacity and a high percentage on the G2/M phase.

The high infectivity, severity, and mortality of COVID-19 led to the devastating impact this disease has had on people's lives during the pandemic. The related strict infection controls and restrictions affected how palliative and end-of-life care could be discussed with clients and how family members could deal with their grief afterward. However, the provision of concise and accurate information by healthcare providers was found to help ease anxiety and fear during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Diabetic cardiomyopathy is a progressive disease caused by inexplicit mechanisms, and a novel factor, insulin-like growth factor II receptor-α (IGF-IIRα), may contribute to aggravating its pathogenesis. We hypothesized that IGF-IIRα could intensify diabetic heart injury.
Methods And Results: To demonstrate the potential role of IGF-IIRα in the diabetic heart, we used (SD-TG [IGF-IIRα]) transgenic rat model with cardiac-specific overexpression of IGF-IIRα, along with H9c2 cells, to study the effects of IGF-IIRα in the heart under hyperglycemic conditions.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common disorder attributed to the loss of midbrain dopamine (mDA) neurons and reduced dopamine secretion. Currently, the treatment regimes for PD comprise deep brain stimulations, however, it attenuates the PD progression marginally and does not improve neuronal cell death. We investigated the function of Ginkgolide A (GA) to reinforce Wharton's Jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJMSCs) for treating the model of PD.

Oxaliplatin-based therapy is used as a first-line drug to treat metastatic colorectal cancer. However, long-term and repeated drug treatment resulted in drug resistance and the failure of chemotherapy. Various natural compounds were previously reported to act as chemosensitizers to reverse drug resistance.
