Institute of Biotechnology, Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology, Slovak University of Technology, Radlinského 9, Bratislava 812 37, Slovakia. Electronic address:

Alcohol dehydrogenase I from Zymomonas mobilis (zmADH1) is a zinc-dependent oxidoreductase that catalyses the oxidation of primary or secondary alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones using NAD/NADH as a cofactor. Efforts to express zmADH1 in Escherichia coli in a soluble form have been laden with solubility difficulties. A soluble form of recombinant zmADH1 was achieved by the addition of 1 mM zinc into media.

Tyrosol and hydroxytyrosol are powerful phenolic antioxidants occurring in olive oil and in by-products from olive processing. Due to their high polarity, esterification or other lipophilization is necessary to make them compatible with lipid matrices. Hydroxytyrosol methyl carbonate is a more effective antioxidant than dibutylhydroxytoluene or α-tocopherol and together with tyrosol methyl carbonate exerts interesting pharmacological properties.

Evaluation of wastewater surveillance results for SARS-CoV-2 at the national scale in the Slovak Republic.

Sci Total Environ

December 2024

Comenius University Science Park, Bratislava, Slovak Republic; Department of Molecular Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University, Bratislava, Slovak Republic; Geneton Ltd., Bratislava, Slovak Republic.

As the COVID-19 transits to endemicity, the frequency of clinical testing and its utility for determining lineage prevalence has declined. This situation is not unique to Slovakia but reflects a global trend, as attention shifts from COVID-19 to other post-pandemic issues and emerging global health challenges. Nevertheless, the pandemic itself has spurred advancements in monitoring the epidemiological situation.

The rapid and accurate detection of SARS-CoV-2, particularly its spike receptor-binding domain (S-RBD), was crucial for managing the COVID-19 pandemic. This study presents the development and optimization of two types of aptasensors: quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and electrochemical sensors, both employing thiol-modified DNA aptamers for S-RBD detection. The QCM aptasensor demonstrated exceptional sensitivity, achieved by optimizing aptamer concentration, buffer composition, and pre-treatment conditions, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.

The chemiluminescent light-emission pathway of phenoxy-1,2-dioxetane luminophores is increasingly attracting the scientific community's attention. Dioxetane probes that undergo rapid, flash-type chemiexcitation demonstrate higher detection sensitivity than those with a slower, glow-type chemiexcitation rate. This is primarily because the rapid flash-type produces a greater number of photons within a given time.

August 2024

Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, University of Hradec Králové, Hradec Králové, Czechia.

Aging encompasses a wide array of detrimental effects that compromise physiological functions, elevate the risk of chronic diseases, and impair cognitive abilities. However, the precise underlying mechanisms, particularly the involvement of specific molecular regulatory proteins in the aging process, remain insufficiently understood. Emerging evidence indicates that c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) serves as a potential regulator within the intricate molecular clock governing aging-related processes.

This in vivo study performed in rat adjuvant arthritis aims to advance the understanding of astaxanthin's therapeutic properties for the possible treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in monotherapy and along with the standard RA treatment, methotrexate (MTX), in combination therapy. The main goal was to elucidate astaxanthin's full therapeutic potential, evaluate its dose dependency, and compare its effects in monotherapy with other carotenoids such as β-carotene and β-cryptoxanthin (KXAN). Moreover, potential differences in therapeutic activity caused by using different sources of astaxanthin, synthetic (ASYN) versus isolated from (ASTAP), were evaluated using one-way ANOVA (Tukey-Kramer post hoc test).

Two bidentate ligands (L1 = 1-pentyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1-benzimidazole and L2 = 1-heptyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1-benzimidazole) were employed for the synthesis of five mononuclear Fe(II) coordination compounds 1-5 containing perchlorate, tetrafluoroborate and triflate counterions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the expected molecular structures of all the reported compounds, revealing a moderately distorted octahedral geometry of {FeN} coordination chromophores. All five compounds exhibit thermal spin crossover with temperatures allocated above 400 K.
