Medicinal plants are valuable sources of bioactive compounds. In this study, we analyzed the levels of essential metals (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn) in the leaves of Punica granatum, Teucrium montanum, Chaerophyllum coloratum, Petteria ramentacea, and Menyanthes trifoliata using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Ethanolic leaf extracts were assessed for anti-inflammatory activity via bovine serum albumin BSA and egg albumin (EgA) denaturation assays and for antioxidant potential by hydroxyl radical scavenging using EPR (Electron Paramagnetic Resonance) spectroscopy.

The alarming decline of amphibian populations can largely be attributed to extent use of pesticide and global warming process. Special concerns were raised over the glyphosate-based formulations, one of the most commonly applied herbicides worldwide, due to their potentially detrimental effects on different animal groups. However, researches on the effects of glyphosate in newt species are still scarce.

Antithrombotic therapy is essential after coronary artery bypass graft surgery to reduce ischaemic events and prevent graft occlusion. Although aspirin remains the most commonly used agent, in higher-risk patients, dual antiplatelet therapy or combining antiplatelet therapy with oral anticoagulation may be beneficial, but this increases bleeding risk. The choice of antithrombotic therapy should be tailored to each patient, based on their ischaemic and bleeding risks, and regularly reassessed.

This study evaluates the potential human health risks of environmental pollutant loads carried by consumption of roach (Rutilus rutilus, Linnaeus, 1758), a bioindicator of environmental pollution from the Cyprinidae family in freshwater systems. We analyzed the concentrations of 26 potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the muscle, gills, and liver, and 18 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the muscle of roach originating from reservoirs (artificial lakes) with different uses (power generation and water supply) and anthropogenic impacts. Elemental concentrations were compared to maximum allowable concentrations and used to calculate pollution indices, including the metal pollution index and liver/muscle Hg index, health risk and benefit indices (target hazard quotient-THQ, target cancer risk-TR, Se:Hg, Na:K, and Ca:Mg ratios), and contributions of selected trace elements and macronutrients in roach meat.

Introduction: Coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) is increasingly recognized as an important cause of anginal symptoms and poor outcomes. Angina with non-obstructive coronary arteries (ANOCA) is often related to CMD. While physiological assessment of microcirculatory function by coronary bolus thermodilution is widely practiced, more precise and reproducible methodology as well as systematic assessment are necessary.

Background: Sanda is an unarmed combat sport (CS) comprises punching, kicking, throwing, wrestling, and defensive techniques that has increased in popularity. To ensure athletes compete against opponents of similar body size and weight for fairness, Sanda competition is classified according to weight classes. Previous studies revealed that CS athletes tend to intentionally lose weight to gain a competitive advantage over their opponents.

Background: Despite decades of high childhood vaccination coverage, pertussis has re-emerged in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina (AP Vojvodina), Serbia. We aimed to describe the temporal, seasonal, and age-specific patterns of pertussis in AP Vojvodina and to analyze trends by vaccination status in order to highlight changes in epidemiology and potential gaps in vaccine-induced protection.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 2796 pertussis cases reported between January 1997 and December 2024, examining temporal, seasonal, and age-specific trends, stratifying by vaccination status across four consecutive periods (1997-2003, 2004-2010, 2011-2017, and 2018-2024).

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the rapid development and distribution of various vaccine platforms, resulting in a significant reduction in disease severity, hospitalizations, and mortality. However, persistent challenges remain concerning the durability and breadth of vaccine-induced protection, especially in the face of emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants. This review aimed to evaluate the factors influencing the immunogenicity and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines to inform future vaccine advancement strategies.

Visceral disseminated varicella-zoster virus infection (VD-VZV) involves the hematogenous spread of VZV from the skin to the internal organs. Though rare, it is potentially life-threatening, predominantly affecting immunocompromised individuals. Diagnosis is often delayed due to nonspecific symptoms mimicking other viral illnesses.

The active ingredients of essential plant oils appear as potentially effective antinematodal drugs or substances that can potentiate the action of already-existing anthelmintics. So far, we have verified that, aside from the direct effect on the neuromuscular system of nematodes, some of them can potentiate the effects of drugs that are agonists or antagonists of nematode cholinergic receptors. In this study, the antinematodal effects of geraniol and carvacrol were compared, as well as their interaction in the experimental model , on the contractile properties of neuromuscular preparations and on the ACR-16 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) of expressed in Xenopus leavis oocytes.

Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia: A Comprehensive Overview of Established and Emerging Concepts.

Pharmaceuticals (Basel)

July 2025

Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Environmental Protection, Faculty of Sciences, University of Novi Sad, 21000 Novi Sad, Serbia.

Iron deficiency (ID) is the most prevalent micronutrient deficiency globally, affecting approximately one in four individuals, with a particularly high burden among children, women of reproductive age, and populations in low- and middle-income countries. It contributes significantly to the global burden of disease, with consequences ranging from impaired cognitive and motor development in children to increased risks during pregnancy, including low birth weight, preterm delivery, and maternal mortality, as well as reduced physical performance and quality of life in adults. ID often precedes iron deficiency anemia (IDA), though clinical and functional impairments-such as cognitive deficits, immune dysfunction, and fatigue-can occur even in the absence of anemia.

This work examines the possibility of using a PbO-based electrode doped with the rare-earth metal holmium in the field of oxygen evolution and the development of an efficient method for the degradation of acetamiprid. Acetamiprid is a widely used insecticide and, as such, it very often reaches waterways, where it can cause many problems for wildlife and the environment. X-ray powder diffraction analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy results confirmed the structure of Ti/SnO-SbO/Ho-PbO, while the morphology of its surface was investigated by scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.

This study aimed to evaluate whether clear corneal incisions (CCIs) created with the FEMTO LDV Z8 femtosecond laser during cataract surgery are non-inferior to manual CCIs in terms of surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) and higher-order aberrations (HOAs). A total of 78 cataract patients were randomly assigned to two groups: 38 eyes underwent femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS), and 40 eyes underwent conventional manual cataract surgery (CCS). Preoperative and six-week postoperative SIA, HOAs, and all topographic and refractive data were analysed for both groups.
