Collaboration in mental health care is essential for implementing a model oriented towards the psychosocial rehabilitation of people based on multifaceted interventions involving different actors and sectors of society to respond to demands. Despite the benefits presented by the scientific evidence, there are still many barriers to collaborative care, and professionals continue to struggle in reorienting their conduct. The current situation demands organization and the framing of well-founded action plans to overcome challenges, which in turn requires a detailed understanding of collaborative practices in mental health care and their conceptual boundaries.

Spiritual Care Competence in Palliative Care: A Concept Analysis.

J Relig Health

August 2025

School of Health Sciences, Polytechnic University of Leiria, Campus 2, Morro do Lena, Alto do Vieiro, Apartado 4137, 2411-901, Leiria, Portugal.

Care is a multidimensional concept that includes spirituality as a dynamic and integrative aspect of human experience. Integrating spirituality into clinical practice enables a more comprehensive response to the full spectrum of human needs, which is why spiritual care competence emerges as an aptitude that fits the profile and skills to be developed by those working on care provision. Regrettably, not enough attention has been paid to spiritual care competence largely due to the lack of knowledge of professionals and what this entails.

: The prevalence of people with incurable and progressive diseases in primary health care is high. Family doctors and nurses must be active agents in the early identification of palliative needs and the implementation of palliative approaches in cases of low to intermediate complexity. While there is a need for early referral of more complex palliative care (PC) cases to specialized teams, primary health care (PHC) professionals lack the confidence or skill to describe their role.

Background: Despite extensive evaluations of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CESD), its shortest version, the Eight-Item version (CESD-8), is less investigated, with absolute lack of information on its psychometric properties in the Arab world.

Methods: To fill the gap, data collected via an anonymous online survey from Saudi samples of students ( 979, 422) and employees ( 314), were analyzed through exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and multigroup analysis to examine the structure and measurement invariance of the CESD-8. Convergent validity and internal consistency tests involved correlating the CESD-8 with its subscales, item analysis measures, and intra class correlations.

Background: In palliative care (PC), family caregivers (FCs) play an important role in managing patient symptoms and addressing patient needs. In end-of-life (EoL), FCs frequently experience distress that exacerbates emotional strain and complicates grieving. Training FCs to care for palliative patients should be implemented urgently, enhancing their preparation, reducing their burden, and assuring Quality of Life (QoL) throughout illness progression.

5'-Guanidino Xylofuranosyl Nucleosides as Novel Types of 5'-Functionalized Nucleosides with Biological Potential.

Pharmaceuticals (Basel)

May 2025

Centro de Química Estrutural, Institute of Molecular Sciences, Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa, Ed. C8, 5° Piso, Campo Grande, 1749-016 Lisboa, Portugal.

While various nucleoside and nucleotide analogs have been approved as anticancer and antiviral drugs, their limitations, including low bioavailability and chemotherapeutic resistance, encourage the development of novel structures. In this context, and motivated by our previous findings on bioactive 3'--substituted xylofuranosyl nucleosides and 5-guanidine xylofuranose derivatives, we present herein the synthesis and biological evaluation of 5'-guanidino furanosyl nucleosides comprising 6-chloropurine and uracil moieties and a 3--benzyl xylofuranosyl unit. The synthetic methodology was based on the glycosylation of a 5-azido 3--benzyl xylofuranosyl acetate donor with the silylated nucleobase and a subsequent one-pot sequential two-step protocol involving Staudinger reduction of the thus-obtained 5-azido uracil and N/N-linked purine nucleosides followed by guanidinylation with ,'-bis(-butoxycarbonyl)-''-triflylguanidine.

Deep Eutectic Systems: A Game Changer for Marine Bioactives Recovery.

Mar Drugs

May 2025

MARE-Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre/ARNET-Aquatic Research Network, ESTM, Polytechnic University of Leiria, 2520-630 Peniche, Portugal.

The extraction of bioactive compounds from marine natural products has gained increasing attention due to their diverse applications, such as in pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and cosmetics. Yet, low extraction yields and toxicity associated with common solvents are a major bottleneck. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) have emerged as promising green alternatives to conventional organic solvents, offering advantages such as biodegradability, greater environmental and economic sustainability, low toxicity, and enhanced extraction selectivity.
