Palliative care aims to alleviate suffering and prioritize the quality of life of patients facing serious and fatal diseases, such as cancer. Cancer patients, especially in advanced stages, often have many difficult-to-control symptoms, such as pain, fatigue, dyspnea, anxiety, and depression, requiring the attention of a multidisciplinary team highly trained in palliative care and end-of-life management. Pain, dyspnea, nausea, and vomiting are the focus of symptomatic assessment in palliative care, but patients experience other equally important symptoms that do not receive as much attention and are often overlooked, which negatively impacts the quality of life of these patients.

Introduction: Hepatogenous diabetes (HD) is a disorder of glucose metabolism (DGM) that develops as a complication of advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD) with an estimated prevalence of 20-70%. It appears to be associated with a larger number of decompensations, but its impact on the natural history of the disease is unclear. The treatment of DGM is hampered by the fact that some therapeutic agents are associated with a risk of complications in ACLD.

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the utility of microaneurysm (MA) counting as a tool for characterizing the hyperperfusion stage of nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and to examine the hypothesis that MAs can serve as a surrogate biomarker for the presence of intraretinal microvascular abnormalities (IRMAs).

Methods: Forty-nine (n = 49) eyes with type 2 diabetes mellitus with NPDR were included in this analysis: 12 with Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) levels 43 and 37 with levels 47-53. Automated MA detection was performed using the RetmarkerDR software (Retmarker SA, Meteda Group, Italy), alongside manual detection, both done in the central retina (field 2).

Introduction: Oxyntomodulin (OXM) is a polypeptide hormone of the incretin family, which binds to the glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor, contributing to a reduction in caloric intake, an increase in energy expenditure, and weight loss in obese individuals. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a multifactorial condition characterized by reproductive and metabolic dysfunctions, with a high prevalence among overweight and obese women. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between clinical, anthropometric, endocrine, and metabolic variables and plasma OXM levels in women diagnosed with PCOS.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the third most common acute cardiovascular syndrome after acute myocardial infarction and stroke. In recent years, there has been an increase in the incidence of VTE, related to population aging and common comorbidities in the elderly, including chronic cardiorespiratory disease and cancer. On the other hand, disease-related mortality, particularly for pulmonary embolism (PE), shows a decreasing trend, which can be explained by improvements in diagnostic imaging, advances in available therapies, and greater adherence to patient management protocols.

Objective: We aimed to assess medium-to long-term neurological outcomes in children with severe acute brain injury (ABI) and to identify cardiovascular predictors associated with unfavorable outcomes, such as heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and heart rate variability (HRV). HRV refers to the oscillations in the intervals between consecutive heartbeats, reflecting the dynamic interplay between sympathetic and parasympathetic impulses to the heart. It provides a non-invasive indicator of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity.

Awkward postures are a significant contributor to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs), which represent great social and economic burdens. Various posture assessment tools assess WRMSD risk but fall short in providing an elucidating risk breakdown to expedite the typical time-consuming ergonomic assessments. Quantifying, automating, but also complementing posture risk assessment become crucial.

Even in the most egalitarian societies, hierarchies of power and status shape social life. However, power and received status are not synonymous-individuals in positions of power may or may not be accorded the respect corresponding to their role. Using a cooperatively collected dataset from 18,096 participants across 70 cultures, we investigate, through a survey-based correlational design, when perceived position-based power (operationalized as influence and control) of various powerholders is associated with their elevated social status (operationalized as perceived respect and instrumental social value).
