In this feasibility study, we explore an application of a Resistive Electrode Array (REA) for localization of a radioactive point source. The inverse problem posed by multichannel REA detection is studied from mathematical perspective and involves the questions of the minimal configuration of the conductive leads that can achieve this goal. The basic configuration consists of a circularly shaped REA with four opposite electrical lead-pairs at its perimeter.

The desmoplastic reaction observed in many cancers is a hallmark of disease progression and prognosis, particularly in breast and pancreatic cancer. Stromal-derived extracellular matrix (ECM) is significantly altered in desmoplasia, and as such plays a critical role in driving cancer progression. Using fibroblast-derived matrices (FDMs), we show that cancer cells have increased growth on cancer associated FDMs, when compared to FDMs derived from non-malignant tissue (normal) fibroblasts.

Purpose: The objective of the analysis was to examine the relationships between sociodemographic, socioeconomic, psychosocial, and behavioural factors and both physical and mental health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in older adults.
Methods: The analysis was based on recent cross-sectional data of 1687 community residents from a whole population postal survey of German adults aged 65 years and older (33% response rate, 52% female, mean age 76 years). HRQOL was assessed using the 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36v2).

Antireflective (AR) nanostructures offer an effective, broadband alternative to conventional AR coatings that could be used even under extreme conditions. In this publication, a possible fabrication process based on colloidal polystyrene (PS) nanosphere lithography for the fabrication of such AR structures on arbitrarily shaped fused silica substrates is presented and evaluated. Special emphasis is placed on the involved manufacturing steps in order to be able to produce tailored and effective structures.

Unlabelled: Although the legitimacy of an economic system is often dependent on citizen support, psychological research has paid little attention to attitudes toward economic systems. In the present study, we examined the link between two system-justifying ideologies, namely, right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) and social dominance orientation (SDO), and attitudes toward the social market economy in Germany. Drawing on system justification theory, we hypothesized that RWA would be positively and SDO negatively associated with support for the social market economy because the social component of the German economic system conflicts with beliefs inherent in SDO favoring a group-based hierarchy.

In the present study, we investigated the dynamics of a femtosecond (fs) laser induced bio-printing with cell-free and cell-laden jets under the variation of laser pulse energy and focus depth, by using time-resolved imaging. By increasing the laser pulse energy or decreasing the focus depth thresholds for a first and second jet are exceeded and more laser pulse energy is converted to kinetic jet energy. With increasing jet velocity, the jet behavior changes from a well-defined laminar jet, to a curved jet and further to an undesired splashing jet.

Aggrecan (ACAN) is localized in the intervertebral disc (IVD) in unique compartment-specific patterns where it contributes to the tissue structure and mechanical function together with collagens. The extracellular matrix (ECM) of the IVD undergoes degenerative changes during aging, misuse or trauma, which inevitably alter the biochemical and biomechanical properties of the tissue. A deeper understanding of these processes can be achieved in genetically engineered mouse models, taking into account the multifaceted aspects of IVD development.

Enhanced multipoint moulding with additive attachments (EMMA) is a process combining vacuum-assisted multipoint moulding (VAMM) and additively manufactured moulding attachments for carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) component production. The aim of this initial study is to investigate the mouldability of the additively manufactured attachments on the multipoint tool. For this purpose, two different test specimens were defined, the VAMM machine was adjusted, the attachments were additively built with the robot on the curved silicone interpolation layer and lastly, the CFRP specimens were moulded.

We propose a concise mathematical framework in order to compare detector configurations efficiently for x-ray beam monitoring in radiotherapy of cancer. This framework consists of the singular value decomposition (SVD) of the system matrix and the definition of an effective information threshold based on the relative error inequality utilizing the condition number of a matrix. The goal of this paper is to present the mathematical argument as well as to demonstrate its use for modeling the best detector configuration for monitoring x-ray beams in external beam therapy.

Explosive volcanic eruptions can loft ash, gases, and water into the stratosphere, which affects both human activities and the climate. Using geostationary satellite images of the 15 January 2022 eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano, we find that the volcanic plume produced by this volcano reached an altitude of 57 kilometers at its highest extent. This places the plume in the lower mesosphere and provides observational evidence of a volcanic eruption injecting material through the stratosphere and directly into the mesosphere.

Summer skiing on glaciers is a leisure activity highly dependent on natural factors like weather and glacier conditions. While the literature agrees that climate change is shaping the fate of summer skiing, longer time series covering both the supply and demand side of glacier/summer skiing, and research that combines natural and non-natural factors affecting the summer ski market are missing. To close this research gap, we conducted a detailed supply-side analysis of nine Austrian glacier ski areas focusing on the number of operating days (in the summer half-year, as well as for meteorological and astronomical summer ski definitions), show how these numbers evolve over time, test how they correlate with meteorological and glaciological data using time-series regression models on a yearly and monthly basis, and highlight how managerial decisions come into play when trying to explain the summer ski supply's decline.

Forest dieback due to climate change has severe consequences for the sensitive environments of mountain forests which provide important ecosystem services for local communities, lowlands inhabitants, and visitors. However, this phenomenon is sometimes hard to identify for the lay public as it can manifest as a slow-onset phenomenon with rather inconspicuous signals or as large-scale disturbances like in the case of bark beetle outbreaks. The aim of this contribution is to analyze whether lay people perceive climate change-induced forest dieback in the landscape or not and what kind of damage they identify.
