We report a rare and serious case of intrapericardial malposition of a dialysis catheter in a 70-year-old patient with chronic kidney disease secondary to IgG kappa amyloidosis. The complication was initially revealed by an episode of supraventricular arrhythmia and confirmed through imaging studies. Catheter removal led to hemodynamic decompensation due to a compressive pericardial effusion, which required emergency sternotomy for drainage.

Background: There is a lot of evidence for a bidirectional communication between the gut and brain. Dysbiosis and increase intestinal permeability may lead to a systemic low-grade inflammatory response or various neuroactive bacterial metabolite may cross gut barrier. Pro-inflammatory cytokines or bacterial metabolites such as short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) are known to pass through blood brain barrier and altered neurotransmitter metabolism or increase production of neurotoxic pathways.

Peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) is a heterogeneous group of hematological cancers arising from the malignant transformation of mature T cells. In a cohort of 28 PTCL cases, we identified recurrent overexpression of MYCN, a member of the MYC family of oncogenic transcription factors. Approximately half of all PTCL cases was characterized by a MYC expression signature.

Article Synopsis
  • Development of primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma (PMBL) is influenced by unique genomic changes, particularly copy-neutral loss of heterozygosity (CN-LOH), setting it apart from other B-cell cancers.
  • A study found that 91% of PMBL cases exhibited extensive CN-LOH regions, affecting multiple chromosomes, with the largest segments contributing to an average 9.9% loss of genetic diversity.
  • The findings reveal that CN-LOH may play a significant role in the progression of PMBL, potentially serving as a second mutational hit that affects crucial driver genes like MHC I and B2M.

Peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) is a heterogeneous group of non-Hodgkin lymphomas with poor prognosis. Up to 30% of PTCL lack distinctive features and are classified as PTCL, not otherwise specified (PTCL-NOS). To further improve our understanding of the genetic landscape and biology of PTCL-NOS, we perform RNA-sequencing of 18 cases and validate results in an independent cohort of 37 PTCL cases.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how different radiotherapy (RT) schedules impact the survival and immune response in mice with high-grade gliomas (HGGs).
  • Results show that higher doses of RT improve immune profiles and increase survival rates while reducing tumor growth and stem cell presence.
  • In contrast, fractionated RT led to poorer immune responses, shorter survival, and increased tumor cell proliferation, highlighting the importance of RT dosing and scheduling in glioma treatment.

Alcohol Use Disorder in Primary Cares: How to Integrate Brief Interventions and Continuous Care?

Psychiatr Danub

September 2020

Université Catholique de Louvain, Psychosomatic Department, Mont-Godinne University Hospital, Avenue Dr G. Therasse, 1, B-5530 Yvoir, Belgium,

Background: In Belgium, 82% of the population consumes alcohol occasionally while 10% consume in a way that can be seen as problematic. On a European level, only 8% of the people who can be characterized as having Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) would have consulted professional assistance in the past year. In this context, the KCE (Belgian Health Care Knowledge Centre) has addressed multiple recommendations to health professionals to reduce the "treatment gap" concerning the patients' care: (1) encourage screening and preventative interventions, (2) promote the acquirement of communicational and relational competences (3) develop collaborations between professionals.

Nowadays, reports in the literature support that patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are at higher risk to develop invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA). However, the interpretation of -positive cultures from the airways in critically ill COPD is still a challenge. Indeed, as the patient could be merely colonized, tissue samples are required to ascertain IPA diagnosis but they are rarely obtained before death.

Cancer cells undergo massive alterations in their DNA methylation patterns which result in aberrant gene expression and malignant phenotypes. Abnormal DNA methylation is a prognostic marker in several malignancies, but its potential prognostic significance in adult T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) is poorly defined. Here, we performed methylated DNA immunoprecipitation to obtain a comprehensive genome-wide analysis of promoter methylation in adult T-ALL (n=24) compared to normal thymi (n=3).
