Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) utilizing a break-apart probe (BAP) design is a rapid, clinically useful method for targeted evaluation of gene rearrangements in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tumors. While clinically validated BAP FISH assays usually yield unequivocal positive or negative results, rare tumors yield equivocal FISH results. This study had two aims: 1) to summarize typical and atypical BAP FISH results on 56,584 FFPE solid tumors over approximately one decade of clinical testing, and 2) to investigate the clinical utility of RNA-seq for tumors with equivocal FISH results.

Hypertension is the single most important modifiable risk factor for preventable disability and death worldwide and disproportionately affects socially disadvantaged populations. We face a paradox-blood pressure control is low and recent trends suggest it is even declining, despite the availability of inexpensive and effective therapies. A variety of barriers on the system, patient, and healthcare provider side hinder effective drug-based risk factor management.

This case describes a 74-year-old woman who developed post-surgical acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) after Photodynamic Bone Stabilization System (PBSS)a balloon rupture with extravasation of approximately 20 mL of monomeric resin. The ARDS likely resulted from 2 possibilities: (1) displacement of fat or tumor embolism from PBSS insertion/inflation, displacement from bioinert monomers, or orthopedic screws; or (2) chemical inflammation/pneumonitis due to intravascular dissemination of bioinert monomeric resin. Though balloon rupture and/or fat embolism is a stated manufacturer risk, (IlluminOss.
