Piezoresponse in WO Thin Films Enhanced by Pt-Nanoparticles as Revealed by Atom Probe Tomography and Cs-Transmission Electron Microscopy.

Tungsten trioxide (WO) is an intrinsic -type semiconductor that can be prepared to exhibit a piezoresponse through doping and heat treatment strategies. We report the piezoresponse in platinum-doped WO thin films, prepared by RF/DC cosputtering, followed by postdeposition annealing at 600 °C. Measurements using Switching Spectroscopy Piezo Force Microscopy (SS-PFM) reveal domains with different polarization orientations and hysteresis behavior, corresponding to a piezoelectric coefficient of = 97 ± 6 pmV.

This paper presents a new approach to measuring eyelid movement using millimeter wave (mmW) radar technology. A two-step method is proposed, involving the observation of a small resolution cell corresponding to the monitored eye and the evaluation of the phase evolution over the measurement period. Simulations are conducted to support radar system optimization and data interpretation with a focus on detecting eyelid movement patterns and compensating for interference from other parts of the body.

Oncogene-induced senescence is thought to constitute a barrier to carcinogenesis by arresting cells at risk of malignant transformation. However, numerous findings suggest that senescent cells may conversely promote tumor growth and metastatic progression, for example, through the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) they produce. Objectives: (1) To develop reference values for health-related fitness in European children and adolescents aged 6-18 years that are the foundation for the web-based, open-access and multilanguage fitness platform (FitBack); (2) to provide comparisons across European countries.

Methods: This study builds on a previous large fitness reference study in European youth by (1) widening the age demographic, (2) identifying the most recent and representative country-level data and (3) including national data from existing fitness surveillance and monitoring systems. We used the Assessing Levels of PHysical Activity and fitness at population level (ALPHA) test battery as it comprises tests with the highest test-retest reliability, criterion/construct validity and health-related predictive validity: the 20 m shuttle run (cardiorespiratory fitness); handgrip strength and standing long jump (muscular strength); and body height, body mass, body mass index and waist circumference (anthropometry).

Originally discovered as a hypothetical protein with unknown function, CEMIP (cell migration-inducing and hyaluronan-binding protein) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of numerous diseases, including deafness, arthritis, atherosclerosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and cancer. Although a comprehensive definition of its molecular functions is still in progress, major functions ascribed to CEMIP include the depolymerization of the extracellular matrix component hyaluronic acid (HA) and the regulation of a number of signaling pathways. CEMIP is a promising biomarker for colorectal cancer.

Expression of the immediate-early response gene IER2 has been associated with the progression of several types of cancer, but its functional role is poorly understood. We found that increased IER2 expression in human melanoma is associated with shorter overall survival, and subsequently investigated the mechanisms through which IER2 exerts this effect. In experimental melanoma models, sustained expression of IER2 induced senescence in a subset of melanoma cells in a p53/MAPK/AKT-dependent manner.

Mechanisms of acquired endocrine resistance and late recurrence in patients with ER+/HER2- breast cancer are complex and not fully understood. Here, we evaluated mechanisms of acquired resistance in circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from an ER+/HER2- breast cancer patient who initially responded but later progressed under endocrine treatment. We found a switch from ERα-dependent to HER2-dependent and ERα-independent expression of FOXM1, which may enable disseminated ER+/HER2- cells to re-initiate tumor cell growth and metastasis formation in the presence of endocrine treatment.

Objectives: Assessment of children's laboratory test results requires consideration of the extensive changes that occur during physiological development and result in pronounced sex- and age-specific dynamics in many biochemical analytes. Pediatric reference intervals have to account for these dynamics, but ethical and practical challenges limit the availability of appropriate pediatric reference intervals that cover children from birth to adulthood. We have therefore initiated the multi-center data-driven project (Next-Generation Pediatric Reference Intervals) to create pediatric reference intervals using data from laboratory information systems.
