The combination of the unique physical properties of molybdenum disulfide (MoS) with those of gallium nitride (GaN) and related group-III nitride semiconductors have recently attracted increasing scientific interest for the realization of innovative electronic and optoelectronic devices. A deep understanding of MoS/GaN interface properties represents the key to properly tailor the electronic and optical behavior of devices based on this heterostructure. In this study, monolayer (1L) MoS was grown on GaN-on-sapphire substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at 700 °C.

The adiabatic connection interaction strength interpolation (ISI)-like method provides a high-level expression for the correlation energy, being, in principle, exact not only in the weak-interaction limit, where it recovers the second-order Görling-Levy perturbation term, but also in the strong-interaction limit that is described by the strictly correlated electron approach. In this work, we construct a genISI functional made accurate for the uniform electron gas, a solid-state physics paradigm that is a very difficult test for ISI-like correlation functionals. We assess the genISI functional for various jellium spheres with the number of electrons Z ≤ 912 and for the non-relativistic noble atoms with Z ≤ 290.

Scaffolds for tissue engineering are expected to respond to a challenging combination of physical and mechanical requirements, guiding the research towards the development of novel hybrid materials. This study introduces innovative three-dimensional bioresorbable scaffolds, in which a stiff poly(lactic acid) lattice structure is meant to ensure temporary mechanical support, while a bioactive gelatin-chitosan hydrogel is incorporated to provide a better environment for cell adhesion and proliferation. The scaffolds present a core-shell structure, in which the lattice core is realized by additive manufacturing, while the shell is nested throughout the core by grafting and crosslinking a hydrogel forming solution.

Contact Lens Discomfort (CLD) is the main cause in contact lens (CLs) discontinuation, referred in literature as drop-out phenomenon. Despite such evidence was reported in several clinical studies, a relationship between physico-chemical properties of CLs and CLD is not still totally understood. In this regard, the friction of CLs surfaces seems to be related to discomfort feeling events, probably due to an alteration of the lubricate function of the tear film after the CL placement inside the ocular environment.

Ammonia (NH) is widely used in various fields, and it is also considered a promising carbon free energy carrier, due to its high hydrogen content. The nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), which converts nitrogen into ammonia by using protons from water as the hydrogen source, is receiving a lot of attention, since effective process optimization would make it possible to overcome the Haber-Bosch method. In this study, we used a solution-based approach to obtain functionalized porous Ni foam substrates with a small amount of gold (<0.

Phage display is a molecular biology technique that allows the presentation of foreign peptides on the surface of bacteriophages. It is widely utilized for applications such as the discovery of biomarkers, the development of therapeutic antibodies, and the investigation of protein-protein interactions. When employing phages in diagnostic and therapeutic monitoring assays, it is essential to couple them with a detection system capable of revealing and quantifying the interaction between the peptide displayed on the phage capsid and the target of interest.

Triangular resonators re-shaped into Sierpinski geometry and U-shaped resonators were designed, linking them with single-pole-double-through (SPDT) RF MEMS switches to provide frequency tuning for potential applications in the K-Band. Prototypes of band-stop narrowband filters working around 20 GHz and 26 GHz, interesting for RADAR and satellite communications, were studied in a coplanar waveguide (CPW) configuration, and the tuning was obtained by switching between two paths of the devices loaded with different resonators. As a result, dual-band operation or fine-tuning could be obtained depending on the choice of the resonator, acting as a building block.

The therapeutic advantages of some platinum complexes as major anticancer chemotherapeutic agents and of nucleoside analogue-based compounds as essential antiviral/antitumor drugs are widely recognized. Red blood cells (RBCs) offer a potential new strategy for the targeted release of therapeutic agents due to their biocompatibility, which can protect loaded drugs from inactivation in the blood, thus improving biodistribution. In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of loading model nucleobase-containing Pt(II) complexes into human RBCs that were highly stabilized by four -donors and susceptible to further modification for possible antitumor/antiviral applications.

Radiotherapy (RT) involves delivering X-ray beams to the tumor site to trigger DNA damage. In this approach, it is fundamental to preserve healthy cells and to confine the X-ray beam only to the malignant cells. The integration of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in the X-ray methodology could be considered a powerful tool to improve the efficacy of RT.

We develop a realistic density functional approximation for the local gap, which is based on a semilocal indicator that shows good screening properties. The local band model has remarkable density scaling behaviors and works properly for the helium isoelectronic series for the atoms of the Periodic Table, as well as for the non-relativistic noble atom series (up to 2022 e-). Due to these desirable properties, we implement the local gap model in the jellium-with-gap correlation energy, developing the local-density-approximation-with-gap correlation functional (named LDAg) that correctly gives correlation energies of atoms comparable with the LDA ones but shows an improvement for ionization potential of atoms and molecules.

Noncovalent interactions (NCIs) play a crucial role in biology, chemistry, material science, and everything in between. To improve pure quantum-chemical simulations of NCIs, we propose a methodology for constructing approximate correlation energies by combining an interpolation along the Møller-Plesset adiabatic connection (MP AC) with a regularization and spin-scaling strategy applied to MP2 correlation energies. This combination yields κ-SPL2, which exhibits superior accuracy for NCIs compared to any of the individual strategies.

Topological insulators have emerged as one of the most promising candidates for the fabrication of novel electronic and optoelectronic devices due to the unique properties of nontrivial Dirac cones on the surface and a narrow bandgap in the bulk. In this work, the SbTe and BiTeSe materials, and their heterostructure are fabricated by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition and evaporation techniques. Photodetection of these materials and their heterostructure shows that they detect light in a broadband range of 600 to 1100 nm with maximum photoresponse of SbTe, BiTeSe and SbTe/BiTeSe at 1100, 1000, and 1000 nm, respectively.

The acoustic waves of higher orders propagating in a layered structure consisting of a silicon plate coated with piezoelectric and/or films were used for the development of a sensor with selective sensitivity to liquid viscosity in the range of 1-1500 cP. In that range, this sensor possessed low sensitivity to liquid conductivity and temperature T in the ranges of 0-2 S/m and 0-55 °C, respectively. The amplitude responses insensitive to the temperature instead of the phase were used to provide the necessary selectivity.

An early and accurate detection of different subtypes of tumors is crucial for an effective guidance to personalized therapy and in predicting the ability of tumor to metastasize. Here we exploit the Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) platform, based on disordered silver coated silicon nanowires (Ag/SiNWs), to efficiently discriminate genomic DNA of different subtypes of melanoma and colon tumors. The diagnostic information is obtained by performing label free Raman maps of the dried drops of DNA solutions onto the Ag/NWs mat and leveraging the classification ability of learning models to reveal the specific and distinct physico-chemical interaction of tumor DNA molecules with the Ag/NW, here supposed to be partly caused by a different DNA methylation degree.
