Prevalence of genetic variants in SERPINB2 and PKNOX1 genes in erythema nodosum leprosum patients from southern Brazil.

J Infect Dev Ctries

July 2025

Graduate Program in Pathology, Universidade Federal de Ciências da Saúde de Porto Alegre/UFCSPA, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil.

Introduction: Erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) is a humoral immune response to Mycobacterium leprae that is characterized by erythematous nodules, and may or may not be associated with systemic symptoms. Thalidomide is the primary treatment for ENL in Brazil, but peripheral neuropathy (PN) is a significant adverse effect. Genetic variants in SERPINB2 and PKNOX1 genes have been implicated in the predisposition to develop thalidomide-induced peripheral neuropathy (TiPN) in patients with multiple myeloma.

Introduction: The profunda femoral artery (PFA) puncture is generally fraught with risk of bleeding and iatrogenic damage, leading to possible impaired flow in such a valuable artery. However, the PFA represents a potential retrograde path to the common femoral artery (CFA) due to its usual good size and convenient location. Since endovascular treatment of the CFA and its bifurcation is gaining popularity, this study intends to report the use of PFA access in complex revascularizations.

Purpose: to characterize mastication and electrical activation of the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles in children and adolescents with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), and relate results to guided occlusion and occlusal interference.

Methods: This observational, analytical cross-sectional study included 22 subjects divided into mild OI (MOI) (type 1) (n=15) and moderate-to-severe OI (MSOI) (types 3, 4, and 5) (n=7) groups. The Orofacial Myofunctional Evaluation with Scores (OMES) form was used to evaluate the clinical aspects of mastication.

Department of Biomedicine and Prevention, Section of Legal Medicine, Social Safety and Forensic Toxicology, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Rome, Italy.

Nanoenergetics are defined as a class of nanomaterials that possess the ability to release energy in certain situations. These properties have been studied and deepened in recent years, so much so that nanoenergetics have been introduced into the use of the weapons industry, among others. It is therefore an emerging reality that deserves attention with regard to potential harmful effects on human and environmental health.

Idiopathic popliteal artery pseudoaneurysms are exceedingly rare, posing significant diagnostic challenges due to their elusive etiology. This report presents the case of a 78-year-old female with no history of trauma or orthopedic procedures who was diagnosed with a large pulsatile mass in the right popliteal fossa. Arteriography confirmed a popliteal artery pseudoaneurysm.

Background: The diagnostic and prognostic relevance of Human Leukocyte Antigen B-27 (HLA-B27) in Axial Spondyloarthritis (AxSpA) is undeniable, with 70% of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) patients carrying the B27 gene, contrasted with a mere 4.35% in the general population. Flow cytometry (FC) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) have emerged as the predominant techniques for routine HLA-B27 typing.

Introduction: Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) is currently an important curative treatment for many patients with malignant and non-malignant diseases. Graft versus host disease (GVHD) represents a major complication in allogeneic HSCT recipients. Several polymorphisms in cytokine genes have recently been investigated as candidates for risk factors for acute-GVHD (aGVHD) in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify and analyze feeding difficulties in children with Phenylketonuria (PKU) compared to those without the condition.
  • It involved a cross-sectional analysis with 86 participants, including 40 children with PKU and 46 healthy controls, who completed a feeding scale through electronic surveys.
  • Results showed similar rates of feeding difficulties in both groups, but children with PKU exhibited less feeding autonomy, were breastfed less often, and used baby bottles more frequently than their peers.

Background: Decreased walking ability in patients with peripheral arterial disease is often a clinical problem and limits the quality of life and daily activities of these subjects. physical exercise is important in this scenario, as it improves both the daily walking distance and the ability to withstand intermittent claudication related to the limitations of the peripheral disease.

Objectives: Our aim was to compare the effects of two types of exercise training (aerobic training and aerobic training combined with resistance exercises) on pain-free walking distance (PFWD) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in a sample composed of patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD).

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that results in dysfunction of the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein, which is a chloride and bicarbonate channel expressed in the apical portion of epithelial cells of various organs. Dysfunction of that protein results in diverse clinical manifestations, primarily involving the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems, impairing quality of life and reducing life expectancy. Although CF is still an incurable pathology, the therapeutic and prognostic perspectives are now totally different and much more favorable.

Purpose: Although risk-stratified chemotherapy regimens improve B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) clinical outcome, relapse occurs in a significant number of cases. The identification of new therapeutic targets as well as prognostic and diagnostic biomarkers can improve B-ALL patients' clinical outcomes. Purinergic signaling is an important pathway in cancer progression, however the expression of ectonucleotidases and their impact on immune cells in B-ALL lacks exploration.

Some chronic respiratory diseases can cause hypoxemia and, in such cases, long-term home oxygen therapy (LTOT) is indicated as a treatment option primarily to improve patient quality of life and life expectancy. Home oxygen has been used for more than 70 years, and support for LTOT is based on two studies from the 1980s that demonstrated that oxygen use improves survival in patients with COPD. There is evidence that LTOT has other beneficial effects such as improved cognitive function, improved exercise capacity, and reduced hospitalizations.
