Introduction: Remote ischaemic preconditioning (RIPC) which consists of repeated brief episodes of non-lethal limb ischaemia is associated with organ protection and improved clinical outcomes through complex pathophysiological pathways. Elastic tethers connect telomeres of separating chromosomes in anaphase of animal cells. Immunofluorescence staining of titin in crane-fly spermatocytes, using 4 different antibodies, shows that the giant elastic protein titin seems to be a component of mitotic tethers: titin "strands" extend between separating chromosomes, connecting their telomeres, just as tethers do. Since titin is responsible for elastic forces in myofibrils, we suggest that titin is responsible for the backwards forces exerted on chromosome arms during anaphase.

In mammals, blood sugar levels are tightly controlled by two hormones: insulin and glucagon. In flowering plants, a comparable regulatory mechanism exists, mediated by the sugar-signalling molecule trehalose 6-phosphate (Tre6P). Similar to insulin, Tre6P functions as a signal and negative feedback regulator of sucrose, the main transport sugar in vascular plants.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease in which fibrotic, vascular, autoimmune and fibrotic mechanisms synergize to promote disease progression. SSc is associated with high morbidity and mortality, primarily owing to fibrotic tissue remodelling and subsequent organ failure. Despite progress with the approval of novel therapies, mortality remains high; approximately half of the people diagnosed with SSc will succumb to disease.

New treatment strategies are required to combat the spread of drug-resistant malaria. The synthesis and preclinical evaluation of novel 3-hydroxy-propanamidines (HPAs), with modifications of the phenanthrene and the 4-fluorobenzamidine moieties, has yielded several analogs exhibiting excellent in vitro growth inhibition of drug-sensitive or resistant fresh clinical isolates and culture-adapted strains. No cytotoxicity in the human HepG2 cell line was observed, demonstrating notable parasite selectivity.

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the CGuard dual-layer stent with its mesh embolic protection system (EPS) in elective cases for treatment of internal carotid artery stenosis and compares it to the Carotid Wallstent as benchmark.

Methods: In this retrospective, multicenter study, we analyzed data from consecutive patients who underwent carotid artery stenting with CGuard at two high-volume neurointerventional centers and compared them with prior consecutive patients treated with Carotid Wallstent (CWS), with and without a balloon guiding catheter (BGC) as protection, at the same institutions. Patient demographics, procedural details, clinical complications, early in-stent thrombosis and occlusion rates, and late follow-up restenosis rates were assessed.

The IPSS-M was developed to revolutionize the prediction of MDS patients' survival by incorporating molecular data. To compensate for lack of access to molecular analyses, the AIPSS-MDS, a supervised machine learning algorithm exclusively based on clinical and cytogenetic data, was developed by the Spanish MDS Group. We used data of the Düsseldorf MDS Registry and included 207 of more than 8500 registry patients whose IPSS-M-requested complete molecular data were known to compare and validate prognostication regarding OS and LFS of the IPSS-M, IPSS-R and AIPSS-MDS.

Background: We sought to investigate the association between circulating inflammatory and cardiovascular proteomics biomarkers and cardiac autonomic nervous dysfunction-sensitive heart rate variability indices.

Methods: Using the population-based KORA (Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg) cohort, 233 proteomics biomarkers were quantified in baseline plasma samples of 1389 individuals using proximity extension assay technology. Five heart rate variability indices (Rényi entropy of the histogram with order [α] 4, total power of the density spectra, SD of word sequence, SD of the short-term normal-to-normal interval variability, compression entropy) were assessed at baseline in 982 individuals and in 407 individuals at baseline and at 14-year follow-up.

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is a life-threatening condition associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality, mainly due to post-hemorrhagic complications such as cerebral vasospasm (CVS) and delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI). Recent evidence implicates platelet activation and inflammatory mediators in the cascade of secondary injury following aSAH.
