Graphene's incorporation into polymers has enabled the development of advanced polymer/graphene nanocomposites with superior properties. This study focuses on the use of a microcellular foamed polystyrene (PS)/graphene (GP) nanocomposite (3 wt%) for nickel (II) ion removal from aqueous solutions. Adsorption behavior was evaluated through FTIR, TEM, SEM, TGA, and XRD analyses.

The injection molding process is one of the most widely used methods for polymer processing in mass production. Three critical factors in this process include the type of polymer, injection molding machines, and processing molds. Polypropylene (PP) is a widely used semi-crystalline polymer due to its favorable flow characteristics, including a high melt flow index and the absence of a need for a mold temperature controller.

Skeletal muscle (SKM) is the largest organ in mammalian body and it can repair damages by using the residential myogenic stem cells (MuSC), but this repairing capacity reduces with age and in some genetic muscular dystrophy. Under these circumstances, artificial amplification of autologous MuSC in vitro might be necessary to repair the damaged SKM. The amplification of MuSC is highly dependent on myogenic signals, such as sonic hedgehog (Shh), Wnt3a, and fibroblast growth factors, so formulating an optimum myogenic kit composed of specific myogenic signals might increase the proliferation and differentiation of MuSC efficiently.

In recent years, the use of machine learning to predict stock market indices has emerged as a vital concern in the FinTech domain. However, the inherent nature of point estimation in traditional supervised machine learning models leads to an almost negligible probability of achieving perfect predictions, significantly constraining the applicability of machine learning prediction models. This study employs 4 machine learning models, namely BPN, LSTM, RF, and ELM, to establish predictive models for the Taiwan biotech index during the COVID-19 period.

The forensic analysis of bloodstains on various substrates plays a crucial role in criminal investigations. This study presents a novel approach for analyzing bloodstains using Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) in combination with machine learning. ATR-FTIR offers non-destructive and non-invasive advantages, requiring minimal sample preparation.

Background: The superior effects of gastric bypass surgery in preventing cardiovascular diseases compared with sleeve gastrectomy are well-established. However, whether these effects are independent of weight loss is not known.
Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we compared the change in cardiometabolic risks of 1073 diabetic patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) (n = 265), one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) (n = 619), and sleeve gastrectomy (SG) (n = 189) with equivalent weight loss from the Min-Shen General Hospital.

Vaccination against the COVID-19 pandemic remains a major part of global immunization policy. The aim of this study was to explore young people’s willingness to continue to receive vaccination against COVID-19 in a collectivist culture. In this study, an online questionnaire was used to measure willingness to continue vaccination, the tendency towards collectivism, the degree of disease anxiety, vaccine brand loyalty, and perceived infectability in 2022.

Analyses of age-related white matter hyperintensity (WMH) lesions manifested in T fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) magnetic resonance images (MRI) have been mostly on understanding the size and location of the WMH lesions and rarely on the morphological characterization of the lesions. This work extends our prior analyses of the morphological characteristics and texture of WMH from 2D to 3D based on 3D T FLAIR images. 3D Zernike transformation was used to characterize WMH shape; a fuzzy logic method was used to characterize the lesion texture.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease and the most common cause of dementia among older adults. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is considered a transitional phase between healthy cognitive aging and dementia. Progressive brain volume reduction/atrophy, particularly of the hippocampus, is associated with the transition from normal to MCI, and then to AD.

Polymers reinforced with conducting fibers to achieve electrical conductivity have attracted remarkable attention in several engineering applications, and injection molding provides a cost-effective way for mass production. However, the electrical performance usually varies with the molding conditions. Moreover, high added content of conducting fibers usually results in molding difficulties.

Present methods used in three-dimensional (3D) printing, such as selective laser sintering (SLS) and multijet fusion (MJF), have limited applications, especially in relation to the manufacturing of biomedical products. The speed of SLS printing is too low, and high-speed 3D printing technology with MJF uses carbon black particles as a fusing agent, which cannot be removed from the completed 3D printed products. Carbon black and high-energy lasers are not suitable for biomedical applications, especially human implants.

Groundwater responses measured from multiple wells at different depths are essential for delineating the aquifer heterogeneity using hydraulic tomography (HT). In general, conducting HT requires many wells because traditional well monitoring is usually partially open at a specific depth interval or is fully penetrating. Accordingly, conducting an HT survey is typically costly and time-consuming.
