Sheep have been widely used as a model for osteoporosis research. This study aimed to characterise changes in microstructure and composition in lumbar vertebrae L1-L7 and the proximal femur after implementation of a bone loss induction protocol (in this species). A sham control and experimental group (glucocorticoid-treated ovariectomized sheep) were used ( = 6/group), with a study duration up to the 24th postoperative week.

The use of anaesthetics has become extremely important in promoting responsible welfare practices in aquaculture and research. However, adverse reactions and side effects have been described for commonly used anaesthetics such as MS-222 and eugenol. This study examined thymol as a new anaesthetic for adult zebrafish (Danio rerio), a species for which no previous thymol anaesthesia studies have been reported.

Transportation-induced stress is a major concern in aquaculture, often causing physiological and behavioural disruptions in fish. To alleviate these effects, anaesthesia is commonly used, but the most widely used anaesthetics, MS-222 and eugenol, have been linked to adverse effects, and alternatives are lacking. This study evaluated the anaesthetic efficacy of thymol and menthol, in comparison with MS-222 and eugenol, under stress conditions induced by a simulated 4-h transportation of 96 hpf zebrafish larvae.

Growing evidence of pain perception in fish has raised concerns about their welfare in different contexts, including research and aquaculture, where potentially painful procedures are standard. Despite ongoing efforts to advance fish analgesia, the field remains underdeveloped, particularly regarding less invasive methods that could improve welfare, such as immersion-based analgesia. As one of the most widely used models in research, zebrafish () are often at the front of these concerns.

Sensory attributes, such as taste and aroma, significantly influence consumer preferences, with sweet, sour, and balanced fragrances favored over bitter or medicinal notes. A lower alcohol content can enhance the complexity of sensory properties, suggesting that non-alcoholic wines provide an appealing experience.

One of today's major environmental and economic challenges is the fight against both agro- and industrial-waste. Almond production and industrial processing exemplifies this issue, as it generates tons of waste and by-products, with hulls and shells accounting for about 70% of the total fruit's weight while skins represent about 6% of the shelled kernel. Since the edible kernel, about 23% of the total fruit weight, holds the highest commercial value, there has been growing interest within the scientific community in exploring the potential of these by-products.

Recent advancements in molecular biology have led to the discovery of potential biomarkers for the diagnosis of acute kidney disease (AKD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). The use of multiple biomarkers in the diagnosis of kidney disease has the potential to enhance both specificity and sensitivity, enabling early detection and intervention that could ultimately reduce morbidity and mortality rates. This review provides an overview of studies on urine and blood biomarkers and examines their utility and significance in various clinical settings.
