Background: Maximal isometric muscle strength (MIMS) assessment is a key component of physiotherapists' work. Hand-held dynamometry (HHD) is a simple and quick method to obtain quantified MIMS values that have been shown to be valid, reliable, and more responsive than manual muscle testing. However, the lack of MIMS reference values for several muscle groups in healthy adults with well-known psychometric properties limits the use and the interpretation of these measures obtained with HHD in clinic.

Purpose: Engagement in activities promotes healthy living. Evaluating it is a challenging issue. Assessing engagement in activities while differentiating the physical, cognitive, and social component of each activity and taking into account the intensity level involved in each of the three components would be very relevant.

Background: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) remain a challenge despite research aimed at improving their prevention and treatment. Extrinsic feedback has been suggested for the prevention and rehabilitation of WRMSDs to improve sensorimotor control, and ultimately to reduce pain and disability. However, there are few systematic reviews on the effectiveness of extrinsic feedback for WRMSDs.

Inertial Sensor Location for Ground Reaction Force and Gait Event Detection Using Reservoir Computing in Gait.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

February 2023

Interdisciplinary Center for Research in Rehabilitation and Social Integration (CIRRIS), Department of Kinesiology, Faculty of Medicine, Université Laval, Quebec, QC G1V 0A6, Canada.

Inertial measurement units (IMUs) have shown promising outcomes for estimating gait event detection (GED) and ground reaction force (GRF). This study aims to determine the best sensor location for GED and GRF prediction in gait using data from IMUs for healthy and medial knee osteoarthritis (MKOA) individuals. In this study, 27 healthy and 18 MKOA individuals participated.

Background: Advanced practice physiotherapy (APP) models of care where physiotherapists are primary contact emergency department (ED) providers are promising models of care to improve access, alleviate physicians' burden, and offer efficient centered patient care for patients with minor musculoskeletal disorders (MSKD).

Objectives: To compare the effectiveness of an advanced practice physiotherapist (APPT)-led model of care with usual ED physician care for persons presenting with a minor MSKD, in terms of patient-related outcomes, health care resources utilization, and health care costs.

Methods: This trial is a multicenter stepped-wedge cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT) with a cost analysis.

Gait parameters are altered and asymmetrical in individuals with transtibial amputation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the effect of four different prosthetic feet on lower-limb biomechanics during gait. A 34-year-old man with transtibial amputation performed four gait analysis sessions with four foot-ankle prostheses (Variflex, Meridium, Echelon, and Kinterra).

Background: The Children's Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment (CAPE) is the most widely used questionnaire for the assessment of children participation. While several cultural adaptations and translations exist, the quality of the methods used to produce them, as well as their psychometric properties, remains unclear. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the different translated and/or culturally adapted versions of the CAPE for children and youth with and without disabilities.

Experiences in the return-to-work process of workers having suffered occupational injuries in small and medium size enterprises.

Work

January 2023

Institut de Recherche Robert-Sauvé en Santé et en Sécurité du Travail (IRSST), Montréal, QC, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • - Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) make up 95% of businesses and are crucial to the economy, yet little is understood about how they manage the return-to-work (RTW) process for employees with occupational injuries compared to larger companies.
  • - The study aimed to explore RTW practices in SMEs through semi-structured interviews with 15 participants from different stakeholder groups, such as SME representatives, workers, and healthcare professionals.
  • - Findings revealed that SMEs focus on three key organizational practices: preventing occupational injuries, managing the immediate aftermath of injuries and administrative tasks, and adapting operations to mitigate the impact of injuries on the workplace.

OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONSMilitary personnel are at greater risk of injuries due to frequent load carriage. Novel exoskeleton technology may have benefits for soldiers, such as reduced physical burden through load carriage support that may result in decreased metabolic cost, reduced fatigue, and lower risk of injuries during walking. However, as for most assistive devices, a familiarization period is likely necessary to obtain the full potential of the device.

Eye contact is frequently associated with an increased perception of empathy and telepresence, but the currently used videoconferencing (VC) technologies diminish the possibility of naturally conveying eye contact. This study compared the empathy, telepresence, and eye gaze patterns of clients in simulated VC teletherapy sessions where eye contact was altered or facilitated. Forty-two would-be clients met with one of four therapists in training for one 20-min simulated teletherapy session taking place via VC.
