This study investigates the "First Settler Wellness Effect," exploring how cultural geography impacts traditional wellness (physical health, social relationships, and financial stability) and existential wellness (purpose, meaning, and community identity) across the United States. Using data from the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, which includes responses from over 325,000 individuals across 110 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) from 2009 to 2016, we analyze wellness outcomes through the lens of the American Nations Model. This model categorizes the United States into distinct cultural regions shaped by early settlement patterns, emphasizing the enduring influence of regional norms and ideologies.

Humanitarian crises, particularly in conflict zones, create cascading disruptions that impact every aspect of daily life, including health and disease outcomes. While international humanitarian frameworks categorize these crises into discrete operational clusters, affected populations experience them as interwoven, systemic failures. This study examines how conflict-induced disruptions transform a preventable and typically self-limiting disease-Hepatitis A-into a fatal outcome.

Background: Previous studies have found paternal occupation, childhood intelligence, and educational attainment to be important predictors of socioeconomic status (SES) later in life. However, these factors only explain part of the variance in SES and thus, it is important to identify other predictors of SES and trajectories of influence from early childhood to adulthood.
Objectives: To analyze predictors of SES attainment during the life course from early childhood to midlife with special emphasis on identifying direct and indirect effects on midlife SES of early childhood, late childhood and young adult characteristics.

The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a major global health problem, with increased risk among socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. We propose SIDS, or a subset, is due to a defect in the brainstem serotonin system mediating cardiorespiratory integration and arousal. This defect impinges on homeostasis during a critical developmental period in infancy, especially in populations experiencing maternal and infantile stress, resulting in sleep-related sudden death.

Background: While screening for cervical, colorectal, and lung cancers reduce cancer-specific mortality, the full benefits of screening are only realized when coupled with timely care across the subsequent "screening continuum" steps, including surveillance (results warranting frequent monitoring), diagnostic evaluation (results that require additional testing), and treatment (detected cancers). Our goal was to describe the proportion of individuals receiving timely cervical, colorectal, and lung cancer care at each step in the screening continuum.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study used data from the 10 health care settings that participate in the Population-based Research to Optimize the Screening Process (PROSPR II) consortium and included individuals who were eligible for a step along the cancer screening continuum in 2018.

Racial and ethnic disparities in healthy aging represent an emerging public health crisis that will only grow worse as our population grows older. Healthy lifestyle behaviors are proposed as a key strategy to promote healthy aging. However, the potential of lifestyle interventions to address aging health disparities is uncertain.

Objectives: In this study, we examine the dynamics of birthing women relative to other family members in making caregiving decisions about postpartum maternal and infant care in four states in India. Specifically, we investigate the involvement of the father, maternal grandmother, and paternal grandmother of the newborn in household health decision-making.
Methods: We analyze data from 551 dyads of women with infants under six months and the family caregiver identified as providing the primary support in the postpartum period.

Communication skills training alone has shown limited impact on improving the frequency and quality of serious illness conversations (SICs). Implementing structured support strategies may enhance both adoption and sustained use in clinical practice. Retrospective review of the impact of Serious Illness Care Program (SICP) training and implementation in outpatient and inpatient settings at a single academic center.

Low dose computed tomography (LDCT) imaging obtained for other clinical indications is useful for the opportunistic screening of osteoporosis and demonstrates additional potential for the screening of metabolic risk through the measurement of visceral adipose tissue. In this study, we explored LDCT-derived VAT and calculated VAT thresholds indicative of elevated metabolic risk in a population cohort of Chinese men and women.

Although high-quality and holistic specialty palliative care is delivered by an interprofessional team, little guidance is available to optimize approaches to and sustainment of such teamwork. This article supports individuals to practice at the top of their education, clinical training, and scope of practice while maximizing the functionality of the palliative care team as a whole. We intentionally use the term rather than to clarify that we are focused on collaboration of team members who represent multiple professions or occupations that require specialized training and meet ethical standards (e.

We aimed to examine the long-term effects of parity, age at first childbirth, and age at last childbirth on later-life health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in postmenopausal women. The Women's Health Initiative data included 15,416 postmenopausal women with repeated measures in HRQoL. We used propensity score matching to create matched samples, where each exposure group was matched with a reference group based on their propensity scores.

Intergenerational games offer a potential channel to impact parent-youth sexual health communication. The "Secret of Seven Stones" (SSS) is an 18-level online adventure game and parent website designed to engage parents and youth (11-14 years) in conversations about healthy dating relationships and sexual behavior and to provide sexual health skills training to youth. Study hypotheses were that SSS exposure would increase sexual health parent-child communication, increase youth intentions to delay sexual debut, and reduce youth exposure to situations that promote sexual activity.

Amplicon sequencing is a popular method for understanding the diversity of bacterial communities in samples containing multiple organisms as exemplified by 16S rRNA sequencing. Another application of amplicon sequencing includes multiplexing both primer sets and samples, allowing sequencing of multiple targets in multiple samples in the same sequencing run. Multiple tools exist to process the amplicon sequencing data produced via the short-read Illumina platform, but there are fewer options for long-read Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) sequencing, or for processing data from environmental surveillance or other sources with many different organisms.

Autophagy is critical for the homeostasis and function of neurons, as misregulation of autophagy has been implicated in age-related neurodegenerative diseases and neuron-specific knockdown of early autophagy genes results in early neurodegeneration in mice. We previously found that autophagosome formation decreases with age in murine neurons. Sex differences have been intensely studied in neurodegenerative diseases, but whether sex differences influence autophagy at the neuronal level have not been investigated.

Background And Aims: Caffeine is the most commonly used substance during gaming sessions. Despite health guidelines to avoid caffeine before adulthood, many adolescents use caffeine to compensate for lost sleep or prolong wakefulness to enhance gaming performance. The relationship between gaming and sleep is well-established, but the role of caffeine has been under-explored.

Background And Aims: Digital addiction among youth, characterized by excessive and compulsive use of digital devices such as smartphones, computers, and social media platforms, has become a global concern. The present study aimed to investigate the association between digital addiction subtypes in youth and various health outcomes using "digital addiction" as an umbrella term.
Methods: We comprehensively reviewed articles reporting health outcomes related to digital addiction in youth from the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, PubMed, and Web of Science databases using a targeted search strategy and assessed them using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Background: The spread of misinformation on social media poses significant risks to public health and individual decision-making. Despite growing recognition of these threats, instruments that assess resilience to misinformation on social media, particularly among families who are central to making decisions on behalf of children, remain scarce.
Objective: This study aimed to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of a novel instrument that measures resilience to misinformation in the context of social media among parents of school-age children.
