From the first experiments with biomaterials to mimic tissue properties, the mechanical and biochemical characterization has evolved extensively. Several properties can be described, however, what should be essential is to conduct a proper and physiologically relevant characterization. Herein, the influence of the reaction media (RM) and swelling media (SM)-phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM) with two different glucose concentrations-is described in gelatin methacrylamide (GelMA) hydrogel mechanics and in the biological behavior of two tumoral cell lines (Caco-2 and HCT-116).

Background: Trauma-associated peripheral nerve injury is a widespread clinical problem causing sensory and motor disabilities. Schwann cells (SCs) contribute to nerve regeneration, mainly by secreting nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor. In the last years, adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) differentiated into SCs (SC-ASCs) were considered as promising cell therapy.

From chemistry design to clinical application, several approaches have been developed to overcome platinum drawbacks in antitumoral therapies. An in-depth understanding of intracellular signaling may hold the key to the relationship of both conventional drugs and nanoparticles. Within these strategies, first, nanotechnology has become an essential tool in oncotherapy, improving biopharmaceutical properties and providing new immunomodulatory profiles to conventional drugs mediated by activation of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress.

Mechanical interactions between cells and their microenvironment play an important role in determining cell fate, which is particularly relevant in metastasis, a process where cells invade tissue matrices with different mechanical properties. In vitro, type I collagen hydrogels have been commonly used for modeling the microenvironment due to its ubiquity in the human body. In this work, the combined influence of the stiffness of these hydrogels and their ultrastructure on the migration patterns of HCT-116 and HT-29 spheroids are analyzed.

Small extracellular vesicle (EV) membranes display characteristic protein-lipidic composition features that are related to their cell of origin, providing valuable clues regarding their parental cell composition and real-time state. This could be especially interesting in the case of cancer cell-derived EVs, as their membranes could serve as valuable tools in liquid biopsy applications and to detect changes in the tumor malignancy. X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) is a powerful surface analysis technique able to detect every chemical element present, being also sensitive to their chemical environment.

The generation of temperature gradients on nanoparticles heated externally by a magnetic field is crucially important in magnetic hyperthermia therapy. But the intrinsic low heating power of magnetic nanoparticles, at the conditions allowed for human use, is a limitation that restricts the general implementation of the technique. A promising alternative is local intracellular hyperthermia, whereby cell death (by apoptosis, necroptosis, or other mechanisms) is attained by small amounts of heat generated at thermosensitive intracellular sites.

The mechanical microenvironment plays a crucial role in the evolution of colorectal cancer, a complex disease characterized by heterogeneous tumors with varying elasticity. Toward setting up distinct scenarios, herein, we describe the preparation and characterization of gelatin methacrylamide (GelMA)-based hydrogels two different mechanisms: free-radical photopolymerization and photo-induced thiol-ene reaction. A precise stiffness modulation of covalently crosslinked scaffolds was achieved through the application of well-defined irradiation times while keeping the intensity constant.

Ice generation on the surface of wind generator blades can affect the performance of the generator in several aspects. It can deteriorate sensor performance, reduce efficiency, and cause mechanical failures. One of the alternatives to minimize these effects is to include passive solutions based on the modification of the blade surfaces, and in particular to generate superhydrophobic behavior.

Nickel tungsten alloy tapes (Ni-5 at% W, 10 mm wide, 80 µm thick, biaxially textured) used in second-generation high temperature superconductor (2G-HTS) technology were laser-processed in air with ultraviolet ps-laser pulses (355 nm wavelength, 300 ps pulse duration, 250-800 kHz pulse repetition frequency). By employing optimized surface scan-processing strategies, various laser-generated periodic surface structures were generated on the tapes. Particularly, distinct surface microstructures and nanostructures were formed.

The CO methanation performance of Mg- and/or Ce-promoted Ni catalysts supported on cellulose-derived carbon (CDC) was investigated. The samples, prepared by biomorphic mineralization techniques, exhibit pore distributions correlated to the particle sizes, revealing a direct effect of the metal content in the textural properties of the samples. The catalytic performance, evaluated as CO conversion and CH selectivity, reveals that Ce is a better promoter than Mg, reaching higher conversion values in all of the studied temperature range (150-500 °C).

An enzymatic-colorimetric method has been developed based on the reaction between L-phenylalanine (L-Phe) and the L-amino acid oxidase (LAAO) in the presence of Au(III), which has led to the formation of gold nanoparticles. The intensity of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) band of the generated nanoparticles (550 nm) can be related to the concentration of L-Phe in the sample. The mechanism of the LAAO-L-Phe enzyme reaction in the presence of Au(III) has been studied through the evaluation and optimization of experimental conditions.

Adenoviral (Ad) vectors have proven to be important tools for gene and cell therapy, although some issues still need to be addressed, such as undesired interactions with blood components and off-target sequestration that ultimately hamper efficacy. In the past years, several organic and inorganic materials have been developed to reduce immunogenicity and improve biodistribution of Ad vectors. Here we investigated the influence of the functionalization of 14 nm PEGylated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with quaternary ammonium groups and an arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD)-motif on the uptake and biodistribution of Ad vectors.

Clinical outcomes of conventional drug combinations are not ideal due to high toxicity to healthy tissues. Cisplatin (CDDP) is the standard component for many cancer treatments, yet its principal dose-limiting side effect is nephrotoxicity. Thus, CDDP is commonly used in combination with other drugs, such as the autophagy inhibitor chloroquine (CQ), to enhance tumor cell killing efficacy and prevent the development of chemoresistance.

The functionalization of the internal surface of macroporous carriers with glyoxyl groups has proven to highly stabilize a large variety of enzymes through multipoint covalent immobilization. In this work, we have translated the surface chemistry developed for the fabrication of glyoxyl-agarose carriers to macroporous cellulose (CEL). To that aim, CEL-based microbeads were functionalized with glyoxyl groups through a stepwise alkoxylation (or alkylation)/oxidation synthetic scheme.

Chiral solitons are one dimensional localized magnetic structures that are metastable in some ferromagnetic systems with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions and/or uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. Though topological textures in general provide a very interesting playground for new spintronics phenomena, how to properly create and control single chiral solitons is still unclear. We show here that chiral solitons in monoaxial helimagnets, characterized by a uniaxial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, can be stabilized with external magnetic fields.
