Studies of Iron (Fe) uptake mechanisms by plant roots have focussed on Fe(III)-siderophores or Fe(II) transport systems. Iron deficency also enhances root secretion of flavins and phenolics. However, the nature of these compounds, their transport outside the roots and their role in Fe nutrition are largely unknown.

This work demonstrates that the incorporation of azobenzene residues into the side chain of low-molecular-weight peptides can modulate their self-assembly process in organic solvents leading to the formation of stimuli responsive physical organogels. The major driving forces for the gelation process are hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions, which can be triggered either by thermal or ultrasound external stimuli, affording materials having virtually the same properties. In addition, a predictive model for gelation of polar protic solvent was developed by using Kamlet-Taft solvent parameters and experimental data.

Powder x-ray diffraction patterns of the doped compounds Gd(5)Si(2)Ge(1.9)M(0.1) (M = Ga, Cu) show the same crystal structure, orthorhombic Gd(5)Si(4)-type, in the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases.

We report the experimental results that show the operation of superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microsusceptometers immersed in the (3)He-(4)He mixture inside the mixing chamber of a dilution refrigerator at high frequency (1 MHz) and down to very low temperatures (13 mK). The devices are based on highly sensitive and easy-to-use commercial SQUID sensors. The integrated susceptometers are fabricated by rerouting some connections of the SQUID's input circuit.

Combining the advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous enantioselective catalysis is possible through self-supported copper coordination polymers, based on a new kind of ditopic chiral ligand bearing two azabis(oxazoline) moieties. When the coordination polymer is used to catalyze a cyclopropanation reaction, it becomes soluble in reaction conditions but precipitates after reaction completion, allowing easy recovery and efficient reuse in the same reaction up to 14 times.
