Article Abstract

Alkaline zinc-iron flow batteries (AZIFBs) are one of the promising aqueous redox chemistries for large-scale energy storage due to their intrinsic safety and low cost. However, the energy efficiency (EE) and power density of batteries with low-cost polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes are still limited due to the relatively poor ionic conductivity of PBI in an alkaline medium. Here, this study proposes a novel chemical approach for regulating the chemical environment of the PBI membrane. Specifically, AlF, as a representative Lewis acid, is employed to reduce the electron cloud density of the benzimidazole (BI) ring, weaken the electrostatic interactions between the BI ring and charge-balancing ions, and thereby accelerate the diffusion of charge-balancing ions. Characterizations on the AlF-PBI membranes reveal that the enhanced ion transport can be ascribed to decreased electron cloud density of BI rings and reduced ion diffusion resistance. Charge density difference analysis further illustrates the electron-withdrawing feature of AlF as a Lewis acid. AZIFBs using AlF-PBI membrane demonstrate excellent rate capability from 40 to 240 mA cm with EE of more than 80%, and an outstanding power density of nearly 1000 mW cm. The battery also performs decent cycle stability of 500 cycles at a high current density of 140 mA cm with EE over 80%, resulting from the robust stability of the AlF-PBI membrane and the reliability of the strategy. This study highlights the potential of Lewis acid-based chemical regulation to optimize PBI-based membranes, offering a new perspective for enhancing the performance of AZIFBs.

Alkaline zinc-based flow batteries suffer from poor zinc reversibility due to dendrite growth and parasitic reactions, which significantly shorten their cycling lifespan. A key challenge lies in the rational design of ligands to eliminate concentration polarization caused by mismatched diffusion and interfacial reaction rates, thereby inducing and regulating uniform zinc deposition. In this study, we propose a thermodynamic descriptor-guided ligand screening strategy, using the metal-ligand stability constant (log K) as a quantitative criterion to simultaneously optimize deposition morphology and interfacial ion kinetics.

Pressmud compost is an organic soil amendment and a robust technology that has potential to restore toxic metals (TMs) polluted soil. The application of organic amendments including pressmud compost in soil for toxic metals (TMs) alleviation have gained considerable attention as compared to traditional methods among the scientific community. In this review paper, we summarized the literature aiming to understand the immobilization efficacy of TMs such as cadmium, lead, chromium, copper, nickel, iron, zinc, and manganese, underlying mechanisms, plant growth, essential nutrients and soil health under pot, field and incubation conditions which has not been well investigated up-to-date.

Alkaline zinc-iron flow batteries (AZIFBs) are well suited for energy storage because of their good safety, high cell voltage, and low cost. However, the occurrence of irreversible anodic parasitic reactions results in a diminished coulombic efficiency (CE), unbalanced charge state of catholyte/anolyte and subsequently, a poor cycling performance. Here, a universal CE compensation strategy centered around the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on the cathodic side, is reported.

Dual-Function Electrolyte Additive Design for Long Life Alkaline Zinc Flow Batteries.

Alkaline zinc-based flow batteries (AZFBs) have emerged as a promising electrochemical energy storage technology owing to Zn abundance, high safety, and low cost. However, zinc dendrite growth and the formation of dead zinc greatly impede the development of AZFBs. Herein, a dual-function electrolyte additive strategy is proposed to regulate zinc nucleation and mitigate the hydroxide corrosion of zinc depositions for stable AZFBs.
