Article Abstract

Increasing leaf area and extending vegetation growing seasons are two primary drivers of global greening, which has emerged as one of the most significant responses to climate change. However, it remains unclear how these two leaf acclimation strategies would vary across forests at a large spatial scale. Here, using multiple satellite-based datasets and field measurements, we analysed the temporal changes (Δ) in maximal leaf area index (LAI) and length of the growing season (LOS) from 2002 to 2021 across deciduous broadleaf forests (DBFs) in the middle to high latitudes. Contrary to the widely held assumption of coordination, our results revealed a negative correlation between ΔLAI and ΔLOS. Notably, the trade-offs between ΔLAI and ΔLOS were strongly explained by stand age. Younger DBFs, with lower baseline LAI, predominantly located in eastern Asia, displayed an increase in LAI with small changes in LOS. This acquisitive strategy facilitated younger DBFs to grow more photosynthetically efficient leaves with low leaf mass per area, enhancing their light use efficiency. Conversely, older DBFs with a higher baseline LAI, primarily located in North America and Europe, extended their LOS by increasing leaf mass per area. This conservative strategy facilitated older DBFs to produce thicker, but less photosynthetically efficient leaves, resulting in decreased light use efficiency. Our findings offer new insights into the contrasting changes in leaf area and growing season length and highlight their divergent impacts on ecosystem functioning.

Rising atmospheric CO exposes plants to high-CO environments, while excessive nitrogen fertilizer use degrades soil, highlighting the need to reduce nitrogen input and cultivate vigorous cucumber seedlings under HC-LN conditions. Calcineurin B-like proteins (CBLs) sense calcium signals and regulate carbon/nitrogen metabolism via CBL-interacting protein kinases (CIPKs), though their roles in cucumber under HC-LN conditions are unclear. Here, we identified seven and 19 genes.

Selenium and boron can alleviate lead (Pb) toxicity in plants, but their stress resistance mechanisms in tobacco remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Se/B application on lead-induced oxidative stress, subcellular distribution, cell wall properties, and Pb accumulation. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis of transcriptomics and metabolomics data was conducted.

Plant roots are colonised by diverse communities of microorganisms that can affect plant growth and enhance plant resistance to (a) biotic stresses. We investigated the role of the indigenous soil microbiome in the resistance of tomato to the invasive sap-sucking insect Prodiplosis longifila (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae). Native and agricultural soils were sampled from the Andes in Southern Ecuador and tested, in greenhouse bioassays, for leaf tissue damage caused by P.

Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) for lung cancer involves complex multileaf collimator (MLC) motion, which increases sensitivity to interplay effects with tumour motion. Current dynamic conformal arc methods address this issue but may limit the achievable dose distribution optimisation compared with standard VMAT. This study examined the clinical utility of a VMAT technique with monitor unit limits (VMATliMU) to mimic conformal arc delivery and reduce interplay effects while maintaining plan quality.
