Background: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality for transplant and immunocompromised patients. While cell-mediated immunity (CMI) is crucial for control of CMV and can influence the management of patients, commercial kits to measure CMI responses have only recently become available. In this study, we evaluated 2 different test kit platforms to determine their performance with the aim of implementing CMV-CMI testing to serve local needs.

The biocontrol fungus Purpureocillium lilacinum PLBJ-1 produces leucinostatins, a class of non-ribosomal peptides (NRPs) with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activities. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the optimization of culture conditions for leucinostatin production remain unexplored. Previous research showed that PLBJ-1 synthesizes leucinostatins more effectively in hand-made Potato Dextrose Broth (PDB-M) than in commercially available PDB (PDB-C).

Rationale/objectives: Image-based vascular biomarkers may help expedite evaluation of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), which remains difficult to diagnose despite available effective therapies. We sought to determine if vascular heterogeneity and central redistribution on chest CT differed between CTEPH, pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), and control groups.

Materials/methods: We retrospectively included 108 patients who underwent right heart catheterization and chest CT (2011-2018).

The use of donor eggs, sperm and embryos in medically assisted reproduction (MAR) provide new possibilities for reproductive assistance and family-making. In clinical practice, it also brings to light questions of responsibility and ethical conduct. Despite this, fertility practitioners' reasoning in clinical decision-making remains surprisingly understudied.

Legumes form symbioses with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, well studied metabolically but less so in terms of respiration. Symbiotic nitrogen fixation demands high respiratory ATP and carbon skeletons, linking nitrogen assimilation and both NADH- and ATP-dependent process to mitochondrial respiration. The plant mitochondrial electron transport chain contains two terminal oxidases that differentially fractionate against O, providing estimations in vivo of the energy efficiency of respiration.
