Background: Resting energy expenditure (REE) estimation is crucial in critically ill patients. While indirect calorimetry (IC) is the gold standard, its limited availability often necessitates alternative methods. In this exploratory study, we compared the accuracy of the stress factor-corrected Harris-Benedict (cREEHB) and weight-based (REEWB) equations with the Weir equation (REEW) using oxygen consumption (VO₂) and carbon dioxide production (VCO₂) estimated via the Fick principle.
Methods: We included patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) between January and August 2024, and computed cREEHB, REEWB (22.5 kcal/kg/day), and REEW. Agreement between methods was assessed through Bland-Altman analysis. Sensitivity and correlation analyses identified bias determinants. Multiple linear regression explored associations of REEW with VO₂, VCO₂, and cardiac output (CO).
Results: The sample size consisted of 30 patients. No correlation was found between REEW and cREEHB (r=0.177, P=0.349) or REEWB (r=-0.006, P=0.975). Compared to REEW, cREEHB underestimated REE (mean bias, -47.9 kcal), while REEWB overestimated it (mean bias, +9.7 kcal). CREEHB bias was associated with sex, height, body surface area (BSA), VO2, and respiratory quotient (RQ); REEWB bias was influenced by actual body weight, body mass index, BSA, VO2, and RQ (all P<0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that REEW was influenced by VO2 (P<0.001) and VCO2 (P<0.001) but not by CO (P=0.164).
Conclusions: Predictive equations may not be interchangeable in ICU settings, leading to inaccurate metabolic assessments. Studies incorporating IC as a reference are needed to determine the most reliable approach for estimating REE and optimizing nutritional support in critical patients.

This rapid systematic review aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy (concurrent validity, predictive ability, reliability) of indirect calorimetry (IC) for measuring resting energy expenditure (REE) in adults with overweight or obesity. PubMed and Web of Science searched for studies measuring REE by IC in adults with overweight or obesity and reported primary outcomes: concurrent validity, predictive ability, or reliability. N = 22 studies were included that evaluated n = 10 IC devices.

The Union Cycliste Internationale recognizes several mountain biking (MTB) disciplines, including downhill, enduro, cross-country short track, cross-country Olympic, cross-country marathon, and multiday stage racing. Cyclocross is recognized as a separate cycling discipline. Both MTB and cyclocross include cycling on off-road surfaces of varying technicality on specialized bicycles purposed for the respective disciplines.

Severe burns are a major global health concern, and are associated with long-term physical and psychological impairments, multi-organ dysfunction, and substantial morbidity and mortality. While burn injuries in adults trigger systemic immuno-metabolic alterations-characterized by white adipose tissue browning, elevated resting energy expenditure, widespread catabolism, and inflammation-these adaptive responses are considerably impaired in older adults, with molecular mechanisms behind these differences remaining largely unclear. As a key regulator of systemic metabolism, investigating the pathological role of adipose tissue (AT) postburn may reveal novel targets that could potentially improve patient outcomes.

In this study, we seek to deepen the understanding of the Fe effect in Ni-oxyhydroxide-mediated oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysis in alkaline conditions, where extremely small amounts of Fe can have a dramatic impact on catalytic performance. For this purpose, Density Functional Theory (DFT) electronic structure calculations with implicit solvation description is employed in a constant pH/potential simulation framework. Nanoparticle models are considered for the nickel-based oxyhydroxide material with different degrees of Fe incorporation, and the pH/U-dependent interface structure is studied.

Background: Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is a clinically heterogeneous condition, yet the underlying neurobiological subtypes remain to be elucidated. Investigating the sub-patterns of spontaneous neural activity and the state switching from individual to group patterns may provide deeper insights into the etiology of IGD.
Methods: Resting-state functional MRI data were collected from 519 participants (257 with IGD; 262 recreational game users, RGU).
