Background: In response to the opioid epidemic, many surgical specialties have adopted nonopioid pain management strategies. Ultrasound (US)-guided peripheral nerve blocks (PNBs) are effective in reducing pain and opioid consumption postsurgery. Liposomal bupivacaine (LB), shown effective in shoulder surgery, was approved in November 2023 for use in US-guided lower extremity blocks.

BACKGROUND Pregnancy-related anatomical and physiological changes, such as mucosal edema and increased oxygen demand, heighten risk of difficult airway, especially under general anesthesia. This study compared effects of spinal and general anesthesia on postoperative airway assessment tests in cesarean deliveries. We hypothesized upper airway changes can occur depending on anesthesia technique.

Brachial plexus block at the interscalene level is a regional anesthetic technique widely used to provide analgesia in shoulder and upper extremity surgery; However, it is associated with a high incidence of phrenic nerve block with diaphragmatic paralysis which has clinical implications in patients with underlying respiratory disease, showing respiratory difficulty symptoms. As consequence, it has been contraindicated in certain population groups. Once diaphragmatic paralysis and respiratory symptoms are established, management is supportive and expectant.
