We present the case of a 49-year-old man admitted for acute liver failure complicated by hemodynamically unstable hemobilia secondary to bleeding varices in the bile duct. Placement of a fully covered self-expanding bare metal stent (FCSEMS) was considered the best treatment of choice over hepatic artery embolization in this patient because of the venous source of bleeding. The success of this procedure indicates that FCSEMS can be considered as a bridge to liver transplantation in patients with acute liver failure who develop hemodynamically unstable hemobilia secondary to portal hypertensive biliopathy.

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the main catechin in green tea, is associated with antidiabetic and anti-obesity effects, although its acute hepatic actions remain unclear. We investigated short-term effects of EGCG (10-500 μm) using isolated perfused rat livers and complementary assays in mitochondrial, microsomal, and cytosolic fractions. EGCG markedly inhibited gluconeogenesis from lactate (up to 52%), glycerol (33%), and alanine (47%), while it stimulated glycolysis, glycogenolysis, and oleic acid oxidation (+42% total ketone bodies).

Biological sex has a profound impact on disease severity, outcomes and diagnosis yet, its role in clinical disease is insufficiently explored. Acute on chronic liver failure (ACLF) is associated with high mortality and multiple organ dysfunctions, where acute kidney injury (AKI) significantly worsens prognosis. Here we investigated the impact of sex on the diagnostic parameters used for severity grading in ACLF.

Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death characterized by lethal lipid peroxidation and implicated in various human diseases. Despite intensive research, clinically applicable ferroptosis inhibitors remain unavailable. In this study, we identify formoterol, a β-adrenergic agonist widely used to treat asthma and COPD, as a potent and selective ferroptosis inhibitor through scaffold-based screening of FDA-approved drugs.

Background: Oxidative stress (OS) accelerates the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD) by contributing to atherosclerotic plaque formation. Current research indicates that antioxidants can mitigate OS by reducing the production of free radicals. Despite many studies that have tested the effects of antioxidants on oxidative stress in patients with CAD, the literature still lacks an updated and comprehensive systematic review.

Drug-induced liver injury is a major cause of acute liver failure. Crizotinib is a first-line treatment for patients with cellular-mesenchymal epithelial transition factor (c-MET), anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK), and ROS proto-oncogene 1 (ROS1)-positive non-small cell lung cancer. Although some patients treated with crizotinib experience hepatic adverse effects, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.
