Article Abstract

Despite their widespread use as high-performance chemicals, the occurrence and environmental behavior of neutral per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) remain poorly characterized. In this study, air, sediment, and wastewater samples were collected from fluorochemical-related industries, such as textiles, paper materials, and semiconductor manufacturing. Gas chromatograph-based targeted and class-based suspect analyses were employed to characterize both known and novel neutral PFAS (nPFAS). Fluorotelomer alcohols were predominant across all matrices, comprising over 90% of total nPFAS. Distinct sector-specific patterns were observed: acrylate-based compounds were prevalent in fluoropolymer production, whereas alcohol- and acetate-based compounds were more abundant in industries applying fluoropolymers. Although global efforts to phase out C8-based PFAS appear to have shifted usage toward C6-based alternatives, longer-chained (>C8) nPFAS were dominant in sediment, indicating that sediments may act as potential reservoirs and secondary sources. Industrial wastewater contained both nPFAS and their transformation products, many of which are not routinely monitored. Nontargeted analysis tentatively identified a benzotrifluoride derivative potentially originating from industrial activities, suggesting its relevance as an emerging contaminant. This study enhances understanding of the environmental occurrence, profiles, and fate of novel and neutral PFAS and underscores the need for their inclusion in monitoring and mitigation strategies.

A novel extracellular mannan from Bacillus velezensis ameliorates metabolic-associated fatty liver disease by modulating gut microbiota in mice model.

State Key Laboratory of Animal Nutrition and Feeding, College of Animal Science and Technology, China Agricultural University, Beijing 100193, China. Electronic address:

Metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a globally recognized chronic metabolic disorder characterized by lipid metabolism abnormalities. Accumulating evidence indicates that exopolysaccharides (EPS) could modulate the gut microbiota structure and function to prevent and treat MAFLD. Herein, a novel EPS designated BVP1 was isolated from Bacillus velezensis CGMCC 24752.

A novel strategy for accessing unprecedented silyl/fluoroalkyl-embedded tetracyclic pyrrolizidinediones has been developed through the visible-light-induced cascade cyclization of 3-methyleneisoindolin-1-ones using hydrosilanes or fluoroalkylsulfinate salts as radical sources under redox-neutral conditions. This protocol features mild reaction conditions, operational simplicity, and excellent compatibility with various functional groups. A number of silyl/fluoromethyl-decorated tetracyclic pyrrolizidinedione frameworks were efficiently created.

Development of a Novel Endotracheal Tube to Measure Posterior Laryngeal Pressure.

Laryngoscope

September 2025

Division of Otolaryngology, UConn Health, Farmington, Connecticut, USA.

Objectives: The development of an endotracheal tube (ETT) prototype to measure the pressure on the posterior glottis during intubation.

Methods: Three ETTs, size 6, 7, and 8 mm, were modified with a piezoelectric pressure sensor. These ETTs were then used to intubate a laryngeal model.

Unlike aromatic porphyrins, conventional oxidative coupling reactions do not yield dimeric or oligomeric antiaromatic porphyrinoids. We describe here the first example of a β-β-linked antiaromatic expanded porphyrinoid through a novel synthetic strategy. It contains two 24π sapphyrin units, which undergo independent reversible two-electron oxidation to yield the aromatic tetracation.
