Early-life experiences shape neural networks, with heightened plasticity during the so-called "sensitive periods" (SP). SP are regulated by the maturation of GABAergic parvalbumin-positive (PV+) interneurons, which become enwrapped by perineuronal nets (PNNs) over time, modulating SP closure. Additionally, the opening and closing of SP are orchestrated by two distinct gene clusters known as "trigger" and "brake".

Knot theory and error-correcting codes.

Des Codes Cryptogr

April 2025

Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

This paper builds a novel bridge between algebraic coding theory and mathematical knot theory, with applications in both directions. We give methods to construct error-correcting codes starting from the colorings of a knot, describing through a series of results how the properties of the knot translate into code parameters. We show that knots can be used to obtain error-correcting codes with prescribed parameters and an efficient decoding algorithm.

Parallel reaction monitoring reveals N-terminal acetylation of plastid precursor proteins.

The N-terminus of a protein has an important regulatory impact on its in vivo stability and half-life. Proteins destined to chloroplasts and mitochondria are synthesized as precursor proteins in the cytosol with an N-terminal peptide sequence that ensures their correct targeting. During their cytosolic passage, precursor proteins are exposed to the cytosolic protein degradation machinery, hence, their N-termini must comply with regulatory processes for proteolytic degradation in the cytosol.

Two decades of task-based fMRI studies have revealed atypical task-related activation and hypoactivation patterns in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), implicating the impaired cognitive processing observed in these neurocognitive disorders. The current coordinate-based meta-analysis provides an updated picture of the pathophysiological neurocognitive mechanisms implicated in MCI and AD, which better controls for false positive findings. To pool and summarise these findings, we conducted activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analyses on 90 eligible studies (N = 2824) with cluster-level family-wise error correction to compare AD/MCI and healthy controls (HC) on fMRI activity during cognitive tasks across four different domains.
