To design efficient molecular information storage systems with multi-photoswitchable entities, orthogonal isomerization of the different switchable moieties is essential. Various challenges, like unintentional energy transfer, spectral overlap, and other energy dissipation channels, have to be addressed by intelligent molecule design. In this context, we took advantage of calculations to design a bis-azobenzene switch, which consists of a phenyl- and a thiophenylazobenzene moiety in meta-connection to reduce π-conjugation. Ultrafast spectroscopy and computational studies confirmed that this bis-photoswitch exhibits alternating orthogonal switching behavior when irradiated with light of different wavelengths. These results represent a significant advancement toward the development of efficient and adaptable organic multi-photoswitches for applications, such as information storage, molecular machines, or smart materials.

The ability to selectively cleave C-heteroatom bonds is critically important in chemical science, from peptide and protein synthesis to biomolecule manipulation. For example, C-heteroatom bond cleavage is widely used in fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl/-butyl (Fmoc/Bu)-based solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS). Despite its usefulness, it has inextricable limitations, such as issues with hydrophobicity and side reactions, owing to the need for the use of a strong trifluoroacetic acid (TFA, a pervasive forever chemical) as the cleavage reagent.

Despite the overall conservation of ribosomes across all domains of life, differences in their 3D architecture, rRNA sequences, ribosomal protein composition, and translation factor requirements reflect lineage-specific adaptations to environmental niches. In the domain Archaea, structural studies have primarily focused on non-methanogenic thermophiles and halophiles, leaving it unclear whether these represent the broader archaeal domain. Here, we report the cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of the ribosome from Methanosarcina acetivorans, a previously unreported high-resolution structure from a model mesophilic methanogenic archaeon.

Small-molecule metabolic chemical probes are tailored chemical biology tools that are designed to detect and visualize biological processes within a cell or an organism. Nucleoside analogues are a subset of metabolic probes that enable the study of DNA synthesis, proliferation kinetics, and cell cycle progression. However, most available nucleoside analogue probes have been designed for use in mammalian cells, limiting their use in other species, where there are metabolic pathway differences.

Structurally colored colloids, or photonic pigments, offer a sustainable alternative to conventional dyes, yet existing systems are constrained by limited morphologies and complex synthesis. In particular, achieving angle-independent color typically relies on disordered inverse architectures formed from synthetically demanding bottlebrush block copolymers (BCPs), hindering scalability and functional diversity. Here, we report a conceptually distinct strategy to assemble three-dimensional inverse photonic glass microparticles using amphiphilic linear BCPs (poly(styrene-block-4-vinylpyridine), PS-b-P4VP) via an emulsion-templated process.

In the semi-airborne frequency-domain electromagnetic (SAFEM) method, the total magnetic intensity (TMI) is derived from the vector synthesis of triaxial inductive magnetic sensors. However, non-orthogonal errors in the sensors introduce measurement inaccuracies. Traditional calibration techniques are unsuitable for induction magnetic sensors because they require either static magnetic field measurements or complex alternating current reference fields.
