Amniotic fluid stem cell therapy improves erectile function in a diabetic rat model.

Andrology

September 2025

Department of Urology, Knuppe Molecular Urology Laboratory, School of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco, California, USA.

Background: Current treatments for diabetic erectile dysfunction, such as phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors, penile injection, or vacuum erection devices, primarily offer symptomatic relief and do not address the underlying pathophysiology, which involves neural, vascular, and smooth muscle degeneration.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of amniotic fluid-derived stem cells in a rat model of diabetic erectile dysfunction by assessing their impact on erectile function and penile tissue regeneration.

Methods: Male Sprague‒Dawley rats were divided into control, diabetic, and amniotic fluid-derived stem cell-treated diabetic groups.

This study investigates the interplay between PD-L1, FOXP3+ regulatory T cells, and CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes in penile squamous cell carcinoma (penile SCC), where understanding the tumor immune microenvironment is crucial. We analyzed 108 penile SCC specimens using tissue microarrays (528 spots). Immunohistochemistry was performed for PD-L1, FOXP3, and CD8.

Frozen sperm viability and seminiferous epithelium cytology of the coati (Nasua nasua).

Cryobiology

September 2025

Department of Veterinary Surgery and Animal Reproduction, School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, São Paulo State University, UNESP, Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil.

This study aimed to describe the cells of the seminiferous epithelium collected by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), reproductive tract observations, semen collection, and sperm cryopreservation from coatis (Nasua nasua). Seven adult coatis were anesthetized, the reproductive tract was examined, and semen was collected by electroejaculation and cryopreserved using an extender based on protocol for domestic dogs, except that prior to cryopreservation, no centrifugation to remove the seminal plasma was performed. Testicular FNAC was also performed on each testis.

Ambiguous genitalia, a rare condition involving external genitalia that do not conform to typical male or female presentations, is often indicative of disorders of sexual development (DSD). A 12-year-old child from Somalia was initially assigned female due to ambiguous genitalia, including an enlarged clitoral structure and scrotal sac that the family mistakenly thought was a labia majora. This led to an inappropriate circumcision, mistaking the penis for a clitoris.

Background: Birth defect surveillance can help identify temporo-spatial clusters and teratogenic signals to inform subsequent investigations or interventions. In the United States, state surveillance systems exist but collect limited information, prompting a complementary use of health insurance claims data to describe national birth defect prevalence trends and investigate signals.

Methods: The Merative MarketScan Commercial Claims and Encounters (MarketScan) database was used to identify liveborn infants from 2016 to 2022, with linkage to maternal health care records during pregnancy.
