Memories can involuntarily come to mind out of nowhere. These spontaneous flashes often feel vivid and emotionally powerful. A new study in PLOS Biology reveals that involuntary and voluntary memory rely on distinct brain mechanisms.

Our understanding of how the medial temporal lobe (MTL) contributes to human cognition has advanced enormously over the past half a century. My work in the 1990s characterizing the role of recollection and familiarity processes in episodic memory led me to study the MTL's role in these two memory processes. In the current paper, I provide a personal commentary in which I describe the motivating ideas, as well as the invaluable impact of mentors, colleagues, and students that led to a series of studies showing that conscious recollection is critically dependent on the hippocampus, whereas familiarity-based judgments are dependent on regions such as the perirhinal cortex.

The brain mechanisms underlying these behaviors and how they coordinate to support memory-guided navigation in open environments are not understood. Using large-scale recordings in rats, we found two distinct types of place cell sequences within theta cycles that encoded trajectories sweeping beyond the animal's location: stereotypic left-right alternating sweeps and learning-dependent goal-directed sweeps.

Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common dementing disorder, affecting 55 million people worldwide. Brain MRI plays an integral role in the diagnostic evaluation of patients with cognitive symptoms. When interpreting brain MRI for cognitive impairment, radiologists should assess the following four key features: (1) white matter ischemic burden, (2) structural changes to suggest normal pressure hydrocephalus, (3) locoregional pattern of brain atrophy, and (4) presence of microhemorrhage or superficial siderosis, particularly for determining eligibility for anti-amyloid monoclonal antibody (MAB) treatment when appropriate.

Music-evoked nostalgia has the potential to assist in recalling autobiographical memories and enhancing well-being. However, nostalgic music preferences vary from person to person, presenting challenges for applying nostalgia-based music interventions in clinical settings, such as a non-pharmacological approach. To address these individual differences, we developed the Nostalgia Brain-Music Interface (N-BMI), a neurofeedback system that recommends nostalgic songs tailored to each individual.
