Article Abstract

Marine vessels are mandated or requested to reduce speed to meet operational, economic, and conservation goals. Vessel speed reduction (VSR) is a key strategy in global efforts to reduce ocean noise. Many regional VSR programs incorporate underwater acoustic monitoring to assess reductions in underwater radiated noise (URN) from vessels. Drawing from North American VSR programs, approaches to measuring URN reduction are assessed and progress toward robust metrics, scalable methods, and integrative measures are documented. Improved alignment across programs is recommended across programs to achieve measurement comparability to advance VSR evaluation and contribute to global underwater noise reduction and sustainable shipping goals.

Passive acoustic monitoring is an observation method for detecting and characterizing ocean soundscapes, and it has recently been used to observe underwater marine life. The brown croaker () is an important fish species in the Northwest Pacific Ocean that produces biological sounds. In this study, the sounds of 150 adult brown croakers were recorded continuously for three weeks using a self-recording hydrophone.

Conventional techniques for underwater source localization have traditionally relied on optimization methods, matched-field processing, beamforming, and, more recently, deep learning. However, these methods often fall short to fully exploit the data correlation crucial for accurate source localization. This correlation can be effectively captured using graphs, which consider the spatial relationship among data points through edges.

The narrowband components of ship-radiated noise are critical for the passive detection and identification of ship targets. However, the intricate underwater environment poses challenges for conventional acoustic signal processing methods, particularly at low signal-to-noise ratios. Previous studies have suggested the use of deep learning for denoising, but there is a significant lack of research on underwater narrowband signals.

Designing unique electrocatalysts that utilizes carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CORR) for real applications is highly appreciated, yet still suffers from low selectivity, stability, and compatibility. Herein, we first report a new two-dimensional metastable-phase transparent conducting oxide: 1T phase indium tin oxide (m-ITOs) with the space group of P-3m1 (164), which is totally different from that of the stable cubic phase ITO (Ia-3 (206)). The internal indium tin catalytic pairs in m-ITOs trigger the strong electronic coupling, move up the p-band center, and stabilize the adsorption of HCOO* for increased formate production.

Despite the prevalence of low-frequency natural and human-generated noise, there are relatively few biological data describing hearing and masking in non-human mammals at frequencies below 100 Hz. Information about the auditory capabilities of mammals with high sensitivity to low-frequency sounds is needed to understand and quantify masking effects. In this study, behavioral methods were used to investigate low-frequency underwater hearing in two trained bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus) and a California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) in quiet conditions and in the presence of controlled background noise.
