Article Abstract

Inhibitory interneurons, ubiquitous in the central nervous system, form networks connected through both chemical synapses and gap junctions. These networks are essential for regulating the activity of principal neurons, especially by inducing temporally patterned dynamic states. Here, we aim to understand the dynamic mechanisms that allow for synchronisation to arise in networks of electrically and chemically coupled interneurons. To this end, we use the exact mean-field reduction to derive a neural mass model for both homogeneous and clustered networks. We first analyze a single population of neurons to understand how the two couplings interact with one another. We demonstrate that the network transitions from an asynchronous to a synchronous regime either by increasing the strength of the gap junction connectivity or the strength of the background input current. Conversely, the strength of inhibitory synapses affects the population firing rate, suggesting that electrical and chemical coupling strengths act as complementary mechanisms by which networks can tune synchronous oscillatory behavior. Next, inspired by the existence of multiple interconnected interneuron subtypes in the cerebellum, we analyze networks consisting of two clusters of cell types defined by differing chemical versus electrical coupling strengths. We show that breaking the electrical and chemical coupling symmetry between these clusters induces bistability, so that a transient external input can switch the network between synchronous and asynchronous firing. Together, our results show the variety of cell-intrinsic and network properties that contribute to synchronisation of interneuronal networks with multiple types of coupling.

Regulating enol-keto tautomerism at the single-molecule level with a confined optical field.

The keto-enol tautomerism, involving a reversible isomerization of the molecule, plays a critical role in organic synthesis, biological activity, and molecular-scale charge transport. It is therefore essential to manipulate the process of keto-enol tautomerism. Unlike typical ketones, β-diketones exist dominantly in the enol form and it is a great challenge to realize enol-keto tautomerism due to the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds in the enol form.

Gap junctions (GJs) are critical structures for cardiac electrical signal conduction and synchronized contraction. Their fundamental components are transmembrane proteins from the connexin (Cx) family, which assemble into hexameric channels to form intercellular ion-permeable pathways, ensuring efficient electrical transmission and coordinated contraction between cardiac cells. Connexin 43 (Cx43), the most abundant connexin in the heart, serves as the primary constituent of ventricular gap junctions.

Background And Objective: Connexin43 (Cx43), encoded by Gja1, forms gap junctions between adjacent cells. In adipose tissue, it is upregulated during adipose beiging while downregulated by high-fat-diet (HFD) feeding. Adipocyte-specific Gja1 overexpression enhances adipose tissue beiging in response to mild cold stress of room temperature.

Background: Depression is a common mental illness with a high relapse rate, which has a serious negative impact on national economic development and happiness. At present, the pathogenesis of depression is still unclear, and there are inevitable limitations in first-line clinical treatment. Therefore, it is very important to clarify the pathological mechanism of depression for the development of safe and effective antidepressants.

Single-molecule electronics has emerged as a transformative field at the intersection of chemistry, physics, and nanotechnology, enabling the direct probing of charge transport phenomena at the molecular scale. The break junction technique, which measures conductance across metal-molecule-metal junctions, has become a cornerstone for studying single-molecule dynamics and quantum transport. However, interpreting the large-scale unlabeled conductance traces poses significant challenges.
