Article Abstract

The article presents research on concrete creep in bridge structures, focusing on the influence of concrete mix composition and the use of advanced rheological models with fractional-order derivatives. Laboratory tests were performed on nine mixes varying in blast furnace slag content (0%, 25%, and 75% of cement mass) and air-entrainment. The results were used to calibrate fractal rheological models-Kelvin-Voigt and Huet-Sayegh-where the viscous element was replaced with a fractal element. These models showed high agreement with experimental data and improved the accuracy of creep prediction. Comparison with Eurocode 2 revealed discrepancies up to 64%, especially for slag-free concretes used in prestressed bridge structures. The findings highlight the important role of mineral additives in reducing creep strains and the need to consider individual mix characteristics in design calculations. In the context of modern bridge construction technologies, such as balanced cantilever or incremental launching, reliable modeling of early-age creep is particularly important. The proposed modeling approach may enhance the precision of long-term structural behavior analyses and contribute to improved safety and durability of concrete infrastructure.

Lithium Slag as a Supplementary Cementitious Material for Sustainable Concrete: A Review.

Materials (Basel)

August 2025

Mineral Recovery Research Centre (MRRC), School of Engineering, Edith Cowan University, Joondalup, WA 6027, Australia.

The global cement industry remains a significant contributor to carbon dioxide (CO) emissions, prompting substantial research efforts toward sustainable construction materials. Lithium slag (LS), a by-product of lithium extraction, has attracted attention as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM). This review synthesizes experimental findings on LS replacement levels, fresh-state behavior, mechanical performance (compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths), time-dependent deformation (shrinkage and creep), and durability (sulfate, acid, abrasion, and thermal) of LS-modified concretes.

To ensure smooth closure of prestressed concrete continuous girder bridges and compliance of structural geometric alignment/stress with design requirements, this study employs finite element modeling to analyze the impact of variations in key construction control parameters during cantilever construction on bridge alignment and stress states at both the final completed stage and during maximum cantilever conditions. The investigated parameters encompass concrete unit weight, elastic modulus, prestressing loss, concrete shrinkage and creep, and temperature. Coupling effects among critical parameters were analyzed, leading to the establishment of a construction monitoring system that incorporates coupled effects of key control parameters.

Institute of Civil and Architectural Engineering, Tongling University, Tongling, China.

With the advancement of engineering technology, prestressed concrete has been increasingly applied in various structures. To accurately and efficiently evaluate the long-term performance of prestressed concrete members, this paper proposes trapezoidal and difference methods for long-term deformation calculation based on the principle of creep superposition. Compared with existing creep refinement approaches and experimental data, the methods presented in this study demonstrate higher accuracy.

A Review of Mechanical Performance Studies on Composite Concrete Beams and Slabs.

This paper reviews the applications and performance advantages of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), engineered cementitious composite (ECC), and recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) in composite flexural members. UHPC is characterized by its ultra-high strength, high toughness, excellent durability, and microcrack self-healing capability, albeit with high costs and complex production processes. ECC demonstrates superior tensile, flexural, and compressive strength and durability, yet it exhibits a lower elastic modulus and greater drying shrinkage strain.
