Article Abstract

We report a synthesis of 1,9-dibromodibenzo[,]thiophene sulfone, which was converted to a respective dilithio intermediate. Subsequent trapping with electrophiles afforded either 1-substituted (R = CHO, B(OH)) or 1,9-disubstituted (R = COH, I) derivatives, indicating an effect of steric factors on the outcome of this reaction. Various annulation reactions were also probed giving rise to extended π-conjugated systems. The electronic and optical properties of all compounds were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis spectroscopy, and DFT calculations.

The abnormal expansion of GGGGCC (G4C2) repeats in the noncoding region of the C9orf72 gene is a major genetic cause of two devastating neurodegenerative disorders, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). These G4C2 repeats are known to form G-quadruplex (G4) structures, which are hypothesized to contribute to disease pathogenesis. Here, we demonstrated that four DNA G4C2 repeats can fold into two structurally distinct G4 conformations: a parallel and an antiparallel topology.

Microplastics are pervasive soil pollutants, yet their role in driving microbial risk in medicinal plant rhizospheres remains poorly understood. Using polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) as a model, this study investigated the dose-dependent effects of PE-MPs (0-1000 mg/kg) on the dynamics of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), biocide/metal resistance genes (BMRGs), virulence factor genes (VFGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and human bacterial pathogens (HBPs) in the rhizosphere of Angelica sinensis. Results showed that PE-MPs exposure increased the abundance of these genes and pathogens while simplifying the host microbial community structure.

Polyimide (PI) faces significant challenges in highly integrated and high-frequency electronic devices due to its inherently low thermal conductivity and relatively high dielectric constant (D). In this study, topologically micro-crosslinked PI films were synthesized by incorporating highly conjugated multi-amino polydiacetylene (MAPDA) into a fluorinated PI matrix. The unique alkene-alkyne alternating conjugated structure of MAPDA, combined with the strong electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl groups in the matrix, promotes charge redistribution and reduces the dipole moment and polarizability.
