Brazil is a major pig-producing country with production systems that include both industrial and family farms. In these facilities, parasitic diseases present an obstacle to production. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and risk factors of the gastrointestinal parasites that infect pigs as well as to provide information for producers through extension activities.

Background & Aims: Formylated peptide receptors 1 and 2 (Fpr1/2 or FPRs) are G-protein-coupled pattern recognition receptors that bind bacterial formylated peptides. The role of FPRs in enteric nervous system (ENS) development and gastrointestinal (GI) motility is unknown.
Methods: We generated mice with germline, epithelial-, and neural crest-specific deletion of the Fpr1/2 locus and assessed ENS structure and GI motility.

Background: As a dietary approach to reducing inflammation in ulcerative colitis, the 4-SURE (4 Strategies to Sulfide Reduction) diet was designed to correct pathogenic alterations of excessive protein fermentation and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production in the distal colon. We aimed to perform a deep functional analysis (microbial and metabolomic) of the feces of 28 adults with mild-moderately active ulcerative colitis who adhered to the 4-SURE diet over 8 weeks to explore whether the 4-SURE diet could modulate the intraluminal environment as intended.
Methods: Fecal samples were collected at week 0 and 8 of dietary intervention, processed and aliquoted.

Metronidazole is a potent antibiotic often prescribed to treat gastrointestinal enteropathies, but is known to induce loose stools, negatively alter the fecal microbiome, and affect fecal metabolites. Dietary intervention may aid in the recovery following antibiotic cessation, but little research has been conducted regarding the potential of fiber utilization for microbial recovery in canines. Using an in vitro fermentation assay, the objective of this study was to investigate the fermentation characteristics of dietary fibers using fecal inocula from dogs treated with metronidazole.

Background: Plasticity in sensory perception and tolerance to xenobiotics contributes to insects' adaptive capacity and evolutionary success, by enabling them to cope with potentially toxic molecules from the environment or internal milieu. Odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) and chemosensory proteins (CSPs) have traditionally been studied in the context of chemoreception. However, accumulating evidence over the past few years indicates that these protein families can also sequester insecticide molecules.
