Article Abstract

Two antimony-based oxalofluoride crystals, (NH)Sb(CO)F·HO () and (NH)Sb(CO)F·HO (), were synthesized via a solvent evaporation method. Both compounds feature a [SbOF] pentagonal pyramid and planar π-conjugated [CO] groups, interconnected through hydrogen-bond networks. They exhibit large birefringence values of 0.24 and 0.22 at 546 nm, respectively, along with wide optical band gaps of 3.93 and 3.75 eV. Combined experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that the pronounced optical anisotropy originates from the synergistic effect of stereochemically active lone-pair electrons, π-conjugated anions, and dense hydrogen bonding. This work provides a viable strategy for designing UV birefringent materials through cooperative structural modulation at the molecular level.

Three novel tellurate halides CdTeOX (X = Cl, Br, I) were rationally designed by introducing planar [TeO] into the binary anionic compounds, and synthesized by the flux method in sealed systems. The compounds crystallize in the centrosymmetric 2/ space group and show a layered 3D structure built by pyramid-shaped [CdOX] (X = Cl, Br, I), octahedral [CdO], and triangular [TeO] units. The compounds belong to a new emerging oxyhalide family, AII5BIV4OII12XI2, and the pseudo-ternary phase diagram of the CdO-TeO-CdX system is provided.

Birefringent crystals are pivotal for modern optical modulation technologies, yet developing high-performance birefringent materials with large birefringence (Δn), wide bandgaps, and scalable synthesis remains a significant challenge. Different from the traditional planar [MQ] and distorted [MQ] (n ≥ 4) polyhedral units, a "linear-group" design strategy is proposed, targeting heavy-metal halides with [HgX] (X = halides) coordination modes to exploit their inherent polarizability anisotropy. Through systematic experimental investigations in the ternary A-Hg-X (A = Rb, Cs; X = Br, I) system, six novel Hg-based halides were synthesized.

Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) are tauopathies with gray matter (GM) myelin changes that are challenging to assess with standard imaging. New methods are needed to quantify myelin integrity in autopsy brain tissues.

Methods: We used polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) to measure bulk tissue relative retardance and birefringence microscopy for high-resolution imaging of myelin degradation.

2D Molybdenum Disulfide Embedded Photonic Crystal Fiber for all-Fiber Phase Retarder.

The integration of 2D materials with optical fibers enables multifunctional fiber devices, such as polarizers, modulators, and sensors. Recent advances in direct vapor deposition growth further enhance light-2D material interactions to centimeter-scale lengths, overcoming the micrometer-scale limitations of transferred 2D materials. However, conventional methods for growing 2D materials in fibers typically produce isotropic material architectures due to uniform precursor deposition, limiting applications that require birefringence, such as a phase retarder.

(CNH)HCNS: Trithiocyanurate Exhibiting Giant Optical Anisotropy via Weak Interaction-Mediated Functional Module Alignment.

September 2025

Tianjin Key Laboratory of Functional Crystal Materials, Institute of Functional Crystal, Tianjin University of Technology, Tianjin 300191, China.

There is an immediate demand for identifying birefringent materials that possess substantial optical anisotropy to meet the requirements of photonic applications. Optimizing the orientation of functional modules to achieve enormous anisotropy is essential for enhancing the linear optical properties of birefringent materials. In this research, the arrangement of anionic groups was regulated by the hydrogen bonds formed between group (CNH) and (HCNS) groups, and coupled with the synergistic effect of the repulsive force between the same groups, this resulted in the design and synthesis of the first metal-free trithiocyanurate ultraviolet (UV) birefringent crystal (CNH)HCNS.
