Article Abstract

While various factors can trigger anxiety in persons with dementia, there is limited information on whether these factors vary based on cognitive status. Therefore, this study aimed to examine factors associated with anxiety in persons with dementia by their cognitive status. Using data from the Round 12 of the NHATS, 1040 older adults were categorized into those with possible or probable dementia. Sociodemographic characteristics, pain, sleep problems, self-rated health, dependency in activities of daily living, social isolation, perceived social cohesion, and depression were included. While sleep problems and depression were related to anxiety in those with both probable and possible dementia, pain was only related to anxiety in those with possible dementia, and perceived social cohesion was only related to anxiety in those with probable dementia. When persons with dementia present anxiety, healthcare professionals and caregivers should consider factors identified in this study to better understand and manage anxiety symptoms.

Background: People with dementia who have a fall can experience both physical and psychological effects, often leading to diminished independence. Falls impose economic costs on the healthcare system. Despite elevated fall risks in dementia populations, evidence supporting effective home-based interventions remains limited.

Alpha oscillations have been implicated in the maintenance of working memory representations. Notably, when memorised content is spatially lateralised, the power of posterior alpha activity exhibits corresponding lateralisation during the retention interval, consistent with the retinotopic organisation of the visual cortex. Beyond power, alpha frequency has also been linked to memory performan ce, with faster alpha rhythms associated with enhanced retention.

Background And Objectives: Older adults living with dementia are a heterogeneous group, which can make studying optimal medication management challenging. Unsupervised machine learning is a group of computing methods that rely on unlabeled data-that is, where the algorithm itself is discovering patterns without the need for researchers to label the data with a known outcome. These methods may help us to better understand complex prescribing patterns in this population.

Evidence suggests that working memory (WM) capacity decreases with age, resulting in cognitive decline. Given the link between aging and reduced hippocampal volume, this study examined whether and how hippocampal volume is associated with WM. 46 participants aged 65-85 years (Mage = 71.

Recent innovations in Alzheimer's disease (AD) treatment highlight critical gaps in knowledge about how to support healthy aging of adults with Down syndrome (DS). RAND researchers updated demographic and epidemiological evidence about the DS population to assess the impact of increased investment in treatment innovations for DS-associated Alzheimer's disease (DS-AD). They estimated life expectancy at birth in 2020 to be 55 years, with ≈ 5 years of DS-AD.
