Article Abstract

Optical sensing offers an effective and promising method for molecular detection, yet quantifying enantiomer concentrations remains a critical challenge. Here, we present a SiC-Au hybrid metasurface supporting the chiral quasi-bound state in the continuum (BIC) mode, manipulated by the rotation angle . An enantiomer analysis method is proposed to obtain d- and l-enantiomer concentrations from peak wavelength and intensity of circular dichroism (CD). At  = 20°, the hybrid design yields a strong CD value (0.62) and a high quality () factor (295). Moreover, the electric field (EF) and the optical chirality () are both strongly localized near the structural surface, enhancing the sensitivity of refractive index (RI) and CD sensing ( = 436 nm/RIU,  = -247). Compared to the all-dielectric metasurface, the hybrid design achieves 11- and 80-fold improvements in and , enabling label-free, sensitive, and rapid detection for environmental, biomedical, and industrial applications.

Spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) has proven to be a robust and prominent method for creating non-classical light sources of entangled single-photon pairs. However, such sources suffer from low efficiency due to the inherent weakness of the SPDC process. Moreover, there is no control of polarization in the generated photons.

The realization of switchable high- factors with intrinsic chirality is of paramount importance for various applications involving active and nonlinear metadevices that exhibit chiral responses. Here, we present a chiral metasurface that employs amorphous phase-change material, which enables the formation of quasi-bound states in the continuum characterized by inherent optical chirality. By simultaneously breaking both in-plane and out-of-plane symmetries, the metasurface supports multiple high- resonances that produce pronounced circular dichroism responses.

Chiral metamaterials with high quality factor resonance present an attractive platform for manipulating light-matter interactions for both fundamental and applied explorations. As limited by the nonintuitive design paradigm, it is challenging to obtain multiple chiral resonances with strong circular dichroism in one metamaterial structure, which could be useful for sensing applications with unprecedented performance. In this work, we propose a dielectric metasurface, which exhibits two quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs) with both high quality (Q) factor and strong circular dichroism.

Photonic crystal (PhC) supports Bloch resonances that confine electromagnetic energy within the subwavelength thickness and enable polarization modulation through their intrinsic mode states. If a PhC generates chiral resonances, then it can selectively enhance or suppress specific circular polarizations, making it ideal for chiral optics. Here, we devise a design strategy to realize chiral resonant modes with large angular divergence and tunable quality factors ( factors) by introducing planar structural perturbations.
