Article Abstract

Background: This cross-sectional study examined the association between physical activity (PA) intensity and specific sedentary behaviors (SB) among preschool children with overweight or obesity.

Methods: A sample of 1,115 preschoolers aged 3-6 years in Taipei City was recruited from March to April 2022. Parents completed a validated, self-administered survey assessing the child's PA intensity (light [LPA], moderate-to-vigorous [MVPA]) and specific SB (total sedentary time [ST], screen-based sedentary time [SST], non-screen sedentary time [NSST], electronic game screen time [EST]). Child's height and weight were measured, and age- and sex-specific body mass index z-scores were calculated. Logistic regression was used in this study.

Results: Overall, 23% of the preschool children (age: 4.85 ± 0.91y; 49.9% female) were identified as having overweight or obesity. After adjusting for confounding factors, the highest quartile of total PA, LPA, and MVPA during the weekend was significantly associated with a lower risk of being overweight or having obesity compared with the lowest quartile. Furthermore, the highest quartile of ST and EST after school were associated with a higher risk of being overweight or having obesity compared with the lowest quartile.

Conclusions: The strategies to prevent overweight and obesity among preschool children should consider cumulative PA of any intensity during the weekend, even light PA. Moreover, decreasing screen time and playing video games after school might help prevent overweight/obesity.

This rapid systematic review aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy (concurrent validity, predictive ability, reliability) of indirect calorimetry (IC) for measuring resting energy expenditure (REE) in adults with overweight or obesity. PubMed and Web of Science searched for studies measuring REE by IC in adults with overweight or obesity and reported primary outcomes: concurrent validity, predictive ability, or reliability. N = 22 studies were included that evaluated n = 10 IC devices.

This study investigates the interaction between circadian rhythms and lipid metabolism disruptions in the context of obesity. Obesity is known to interfere with daily rhythmicity, a crucial process for maintaining brain homeostasis. To better understand this relationship, we analyzed transcriptional data from mice fed with normal or high-fat diet, focusing on the mechanisms linking genes involved with those regulating circadian rhythms.

There is a lack of longitudinal data on type 2 diabetes (T2D) in low- and middle-income countries. We leveraged the electronic health records (EHR) system of a publicly funded academic institution to establish a retrospective cohort with longitudinal data to facilitate benchmarking, surveillance, and resource planning of a multi-ethnic T2D population in Malaysia. This cohort included 15,702 adults aged ≥ 18 years with T2D who received outpatient care (January 2002-December 2020) from Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

BackgroundDolutegravir (DTG)-based antiretroviral treatment is now the recommended regimen because of its high efficacy and fewer adverse effects. Nonetheless, hyperglycemia as adverse effect of DTG was reported in few clinical observations.MethodsA case-control study was carried out among DTG-based antiretroviral therapy (ART) users during the study period.

Importance: As obesity rates rise in the US, managing associated metabolic comorbidities presents a growing burden to the health care system. While bariatric surgery has shown promise in mitigating established metabolic conditions, no large studies have quantified the risk of developing major obesity-related comorbidities after bariatric surgery.

Objective: To identify common metabolic phenotypes for patients eligible for bariatric surgery and to estimate crude and adjusted incidence rates of additional metabolic comorbidities associated with bariatric surgery compared with weight management program (WMP) alone.
