Article Abstract

With the global population projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, agricultural systems must address challenges related to soil fertility, water retention, and sustainability. To address these issues, biobased hydrogels made from natural polymers, such as gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) and chitosan (CS), have shown promise as sustainable soil conditioners. This study investigates GelMA/CS-based semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) hydrogels, evaluating their swelling capacity, water retention, mechanical properties, and degradation behavior compared to GelMA-only hydrogels. The results show that semi-IPNs with higher CS concentrations exhibit superior water retention and faster degradation rates, alongside enhanced mechanical strength. Scanning electron microscopy reveals smaller, uniform pores in semi-IPNs, contributing to improved water retention. These findings suggest that GelMA/CS semi-IPNs are promising, biodegradable alternatives for enhancing soil moisture retention, soil fertility, and environmental sustainability in agriculture.

This review highlights the integration of drug repurposing and nanotechnology-driven delivery strategies as innovative approaches to enhance the antifungal activity of statins against mucosal candidiasis, providing a framework for future translational research and clinical application. The rising prevalence of antifungal resistance and virulence factors of Candida albicans underscore the limitations of current therapies. Statins, commonly used as lipid-lowering agents, have emerged as attractive repurposed drug candidates due to their ability to interfere with fungal ergosterol biosynthesis and Ras-mediated signaling pathways.

Efficient water-absorbing and water-holding materials have shown notable promise in various applications, including hygiene products, agriculture, and drug delivery systems. Opposed to traditional absorbents prepared using synthetic polymers, bio-based, environmentally friendly efficient absorbents have attracted more attention from both academia and the industry. Herein, the aerogel absorbents from functional sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCNa), citric acid (CA) crosslinker, and cellulose nanofibers (CNF) have been developed via freeze-drying and cross-linking process.

Life Quality (LQ) Engineering Interest Group, School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, College of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, Soochow University, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province 215123, China. Electronic address:

Gastrointestinal (GI) physiological variability significantly influences dissolution and bioavailability of non-disintegrating solid drug systems. This study employed the dynamic human stomach-intestine (DHSI-IV, branded as NERDT) system to characterize how gastric emptying kinetics and intestinal environmental dynamics affect drug release, using extended-release metformin matrix tablets (Glucophage XR®) and metformin osmotic pump tablets (Nida®) as model formulations. The DHSI-IV (NERDT) system accurately simulated three fasting-state gastric emptying profiles (30-120 min complete emptying) with excellent fit to the modified Elashoff model (R = 0.

Biochar has emerged as a promising soil amendment for improving soil quality and mitigating environmental impacts, such as nutrient leaching. This study evaluated the impacts of ball-milled bamboo nano-biochar on water infiltration dynamics, retention capacity, and nitrogen‑phosphorus leaching in sandy loam soil using controlled column experiments and leaching experiments with five application doses alongside bulk biochar and untreated controls. Experimental results demonstrated that nano-biochar application significantly enhanced soil water retention capacity compared to the raw soil.

MXene-enhanced paper/hydrogel bilayer moisture-driven generator for long-term energy output.

J Colloid Interface Sci

College of Bioresources Chemical and Materials Engineering, Shaanxi University of Science & Technology, Xi'an 710021, China. Electronic address:

Moisture-driven energy generators (MEGs) represent a renewable energy technology, yet challenges such as environmental humidity dependence and transient power generation behavior hinder their practical applications. Herein, a high-performance bilayer MEG is developed by integrating MXene-impregnated paper with a polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel to realize environmental tolerance and sustained power generation. Electronegative MXene and paper with 3D porous structure synergistically facilitate selective transport of positive charge, while the hydrogel serves as a water reservoir to provide a moist environment and migratory ions.
