Article Abstract

Melatonin supplements have been widely used to improve sleep quality and overcome sleep disorders, with melatonin and vitamin B6 serving as the primary active ingredients. This study developed a novel analytical method for the simultaneous quantification of melatonin and vitamin B6 using H-NMR spectroscopy. The characteristic signals of melatonin and vitamin B6 hydrochloride at δ 7.09 ppm and δ 8.12 ppm were selected for quantitative analysis, with maleic acid used as the internal standard. The method was validated for specificity, precision, and stability. The results demonstrate that the method exhibits high precision and complies with the guidelines established by the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA). Furthermore, this method has been successfully applied to commercially available formulations. Compared to conventional methods, the H-NMR technique offers a more efficient and simpler alternative, making it suitable for the simultaneous quantitative determination of melatonin and vitamin B6 hydrochloride. This approach ensures the quality, stability, and safety of commercial melatonin products.

Background: Oxidative stress (OS) accelerates the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD) by contributing to atherosclerotic plaque formation. Current research indicates that antioxidants can mitigate OS by reducing the production of free radicals. Despite many studies that have tested the effects of antioxidants on oxidative stress in patients with CAD, the literature still lacks an updated and comprehensive systematic review.

Oxidative stress is known to have a detrimental effect on wound healing following oral mucosal injuries. Exogenous antioxidant administration to restore redox balance has been proposed as a therapeutic approach to support wound healing after oral surgery. In our study, we evaluated the relative effectiveness of melatonin and alpha-lipoic acid in palatal wound healing, as well as the potential synergistic effect of their combined treatment.

In this study, we evaluated the protective effects of combined melatonin and vitamin D3 treatment on ovarian reserve and tissue architecture in a cyclophosphamide-induced premature ovarian failure (POF) rat model. Forty-nine adult female rats were randomly assigned to seven groups, including intact control (group 1), single-agent control (groups 2 and 3), POF (group 4), and POF + treatment (groups 5, 6, and 7) groups. Cyclophosphamide exposure led to elevated FSH and LH levels, reduced estradiol and progesterone levels, extensive follicular atresia, stromal fibrosis, and the marked degeneration of the ovarian ultrastructure.

This case report presents a unique constellation of symptoms-including dry eye disease, visual and general asthenia, sleep disturbances, and restless legs syndrome-in a patient with a recent history of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. While these symptoms have individually been associated with either COVID-19 or long COVID, their concurrent presentation and the simultaneous, positive response across all manifestations to a combined therapeutic regimen have not been previously described in a single case. The patient demonstrated notable improvement in both ocular and systemic symptoms following a six-week treatment with topical tear substitutes and oral administration of melatonin, and a multivitamin supplement including B-complex vitamins, antioxidants, and neuroprotective agents (Colinplus Delta, Farmaplus Italia Srl, Via Giovanni Porzio 4, 80143 Napoli, Italy).

Human skin plays a crucial role in protecting the body against environmental stressors. The skin cells involved in photoprotection are melanocytes responsible for the synthesis of melanin and contributing to the pigmentation and photoprotection of the body, but also susceptible to oxidative stress and its consequences. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the unique functions of melanocytes, highlighting their vulnerability to oxidative stress.
