Article Abstract

Estriol (E3) is an essential hormone during pregnancy and is used as a biomarker to monitor gestational and fetoplacental health. In this study, we propose a miniaturized electrochemical sensor based on polyimide laser-scribed graphene (LSG) modified with a Nafion™ membrane and novel TiO-5%Au nanocrystals for selective detection of E3. The morphology and structure of the sensor were evaluated, and the modification with the nanocomposite improved the analytical signal of E3 by 97% compared with the bare LSG electrode. The detection of E3 was performed using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) at pH 2, and the device showed a good analytical performance with a linear response (R = 0.998) in the concentration range 5 to 80 µmol L. The values obtained for the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 1.00 µmol L and 3.33 µmol L, respectively. The investigation of mass transport revealed that it occurs via a mixed process (diffusional and adsorptive), and the E3 electrooxidation presents a proton-coupled electron transfer mechanism involving a 1:1 electron:proton ratio. The proposed sensor showed high manufacturing reproducibility (RSD = 4.5%, n = 10) and selectivity, with interference levels below 15% from other species. Tests using fortified synthetic urine demonstrated recoveries exceeding 90%, confirming the method's accuracy. The proposed Nafion™/TiO-5%Au/LSG sensor is a viable alternative for E3 determination due to its simple fabrication, low cost, and portability features. In summary, the proposed method offers an efficient and accessible alternative for the rapid detection of E3, highlighting its potential for advancing diagnostic technologies.

Nanoparticles in their pure colloidal form synthesized by laser-assisted processes such as laser ablation/fragmentation/irradiation/melting in liquids have attained much interest from the scientific community because of their specialties like facile synthesis, ultra-high purity, biocompatibility, colloidal stability in addition to other benefits like tunable size and morphology, crystalline phases, new compounds and alloys, and defect engineering. These nanocolloids are useful for fabricating different devices mainly with applications in optoelectronics, catalysis, sensors, photodetectors, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates, and solar cells. In this review article, we describe different methods of nanocolloidal synthesis using laser-assisted processes and corresponding thin film fabrication methods, particularly those utilized for device fabrication and characterization.

Wearable sensors integrated with deep learning techniques have the potential to revolutionize seamless human-machine interfaces for real-time health monitoring, clinical diagnosis, and robotic applications. Nevertheless, it remains a critical challenge to simultaneously achieve desirable mechanical and electrical performance along with biocompatibility, adhesion, self-healing, and environmental robustness with excellent sensing metrics. Herein, we report a multifunctional, anti-freezing, self-adhesive, and self-healable organogel pressure sensor composed of cobalt nanoparticle encapsulated nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (CoN CNT) embedded in a polyvinyl alcohol-gelatin (PVA/GLE) matrix.

An electrochemical sensor based on MXene/PANI/SnO nanomaterials was developed for the detection of 4-aminophenol (4-AP). In situ oxidative growth of PANI on the MXene surface effectively hindered the stacking of the lamellae and increased the specific surface area of the composites. Further complexation of tin dioxide with swelling properties of the structure provided adsorption and catalytic sites for 4-AP.

With the continuous development of flexible sensors and flexible energy storage devices, gel materials with good flexibility, toughness, and tunable properties have attracted wide attention. Deep eutectic solvents (DES) have an obvious advantage of thermal and chemical stability over water. Therefore, eutectogels can effectively solve the problem of insufficient stability of traditional hydrogels.

A novel molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based electrochemical sensor has been developed for the selective detection of naringenin (NAR) in various real-world samples, including plant extracts, wine, and herbal supplements. To enhance the active surface area and porosity of the glassy carbon electrode (GCE), a 2D/0D nanocomposite composed of graphene oxide (GO) and cobalt ferrite (CFO) nanoparticles, CFO_GO, was incorporated into the sensor design. 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) was selected as the functional monomer to prepare the MIPs.
