Article Abstract

Many living organisms are exposed to the predictable environmental cycles of nature (e.g. day-night alternation, lunar phases, seasons and tides). Like all other organisms, fish have developed internal time-control systems to anticipate these natural fluctuations, tuning internal physiology to external conditions. These systems are synchronised by external signals such as light and temperature. Practically all behavioural activities and physiological processes exhibit rhythms directed to optimize the success of the species while minimising energy expenditure. The feeding process, considered in a broad sense from food detection to absorption of nutrients in the intestine, is also dependent on both external and internal rhythms. However, feeding time may also function as synchroniser of the digestive function. The gastrointestinal tract and accessory glands form a complex system involved not only in the processing of ingested food but also in hormonal and immunological responses. This Review highlights whether cyclic rhythms are driving different crucial aspects of the fish digestive process at different stages of development (from larvae to adults). We discuss this topic at different levels of organisation, from cells (i.e. molecular networks) to organs (i.e. luminal conditions, gut functionality and microbiota). Gathering the current knowledge on rhythmic regulation of digestive and related tissues is crucial to design future research directions and improve the understanding of fish metabolic responses and health. The biological variety of fish offers an excellent comparative framework which allows for comparisons with other zoological groups.

Background: Dermal clear cell sarcoma (DCCS) is a rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasm. Owing to the overlaps in its morphological and immunophenotypic profiles with a broad spectrum of tumors exhibiting melanocytic differentiation, it is frequently misdiagnosed as other tumor entities in clinical practice. By systematically analyzing the clinicopathological characteristics, immunophenotypic features, and molecular biological properties of DCCS, this study intends to further enhance pathologists' understanding of this disease and provide a valuable reference for its accurate diagnosis.

Fatal infections with the rare COUG strain of the zoonotic parasite Toxoplasma gondii were recently detected for the first time in four southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) exhibiting severe protozoal steatitis. The objectives of this study were to describe new COUG strain infections in sea otters, investigate the potential contributory role of a recently discovered parasite-infecting narnavirus (Apocryptovirus odysseus) in these infections, assess the potential contribution of vitamin E deficiency in the development of systemic steatitis, and explore the utility of serotyping for strain-specific diagnosis of T. gondii infections in sea otters.

The Tone River in Japan represents one of the southern limit distributions of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) on the western side of the North Pacific, but the number of adult chum salmon observed here has declined dramatically since 2013 and reached zero in 2024. The factors behind the recent decline of the chum salmon population in the Tone River were investigated by using ocean reanalysis data and a 20-year particle-tracking simulation. Virtual chum salmon fry were released at the mouth of the Tone River in spring each year with six different swimming strategies to evaluate the effects of ocean currents on the population growth rate of salmon.

Entomopathogenic nematode symbiotic bacteria (EPNB) enhance nematode insecticidal capacity through symbiosis. This study cloned the complete 32-kb type III secretion system (T3SS) gene cluster from TT01 using Red/ET recombineering and functionally expressed it in T3SS-deficient HN_xs01. Heterologous T3SS expression significantly enhanced HN_xs01 adhesion and invasion capabilities in CF-203 cells.
