Sleep and pregnancy are contentious bedfellows; sleep disorders and disturbances are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, although much is still unknown about this relationship. Sleep and pregnancy have been studied in many models, but the focus has been heavily on mammals. However, pregnancy is ubiquitous across animals - a hallmark of convergent evolution; similarly, sleep is a shared feature. Here, we present an ideal model in which to study the dynamics between sleep and pregnancy in invertebrates. The Pacific beetle mimic cockroach, Diploptera punctata, is a viviparous species that uses milk proteins to nourish its young with a broodsac over a 3 month pregnancy. However, little is known about the relationship between this unique reproductive biology and daily rhythms of activity and sleep. We established that D. punctata displayed a peak in activity following sunset, with males significantly more active than females. When scavenging behavior was examined, males and non-pregnant females emerged more often and traveled further from a shelter compared with pregnant females, suggesting reduced risk-taking behavior in late pregnancy. Chronic disturbance of sleep during pregnancy negatively impacted embryo development by increasing gestational duration and decreasing the transcription of milk proteins. These findings indicate that sleep is key to embryo development and that pregnancy has a significant impact on the daily rhythms of activity in Diploptera punctata. More broadly, we present a tractable invertebrate model for understanding the relationship between sleep and pregnancy, which will aid in the exploration of the poorly understood interface between these two ubiquitous and highly conserved traits.

The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a major global health problem, with increased risk among socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. We propose SIDS, or a subset, is due to a defect in the brainstem serotonin system mediating cardiorespiratory integration and arousal. This defect impinges on homeostasis during a critical developmental period in infancy, especially in populations experiencing maternal and infantile stress, resulting in sleep-related sudden death.

The frequency and severity of heat waves are expected to worsen with climate change. Exposure to extreme heat, or prolonged unusually high temperatures, are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The fetus, infant, and young child are more sensitive to higher temperatures than older children and most adults given that they are rapidly developing.

Objective: To establish and validate a nomogram model for the quality of sleep in patients with recurrent implantation failure (RIF) and to evaluate its performance.
Methods: From January 2023 to June 2023, 484 RIF patients who underwent ART fertilization treatment at the Reproductive Medicine Center of Tongji University-affiliated Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital were selected as the modeling set and internal validation. Additionally, from July to September 2023, 223 RIF patients who underwent ART fertilization treatment at the Reproductive Medicine Center of Tongji University-affiliated Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital were chosen as the external validation set.

Purpose Of Review: Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) encompasses a spectrum of disorders ranging from snoring to complete upper airway collapse and cessation of respiration leading to oxygen desaturation and sleep fragmentation. SDB is highly prevalent in the pregnant population, particularly predisposed to SDB because of physiological changes such as hormonal changes, changes to body habitus, and respiratory mechanics due to the gravid uterus.
Recent Findings: The disorder has been associated with adverse maternal outcomes in pregnancy such as gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, impaired glucose metabolism, severe maternal cardiovascular morbidity, and long-term morbidity, as well as maternal mental health conditions with potential societal consequences.
