Article Abstract

Grid cells in the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) are believed to path integrate speed and direction signals to activate at triangular grids of locations in an environment, thus implementing a population code for position. In parallel, place cells in the hippocampus (HC) fire at spatially confined locations, with selectivity tuned not only to allocentric position but also to environmental contexts, such as sensory cues. Although grid and place cells both encode spatial information and support memory for multiple locations, why animals maintain two such representations remains unclear. Noting that place representations seem to have other functional roles in intrinsically motivated tasks such as recalling locations from sensory cues, we propose that animals maintain grid and place representations together to support planning. Specifically, we posit that place cells auto-associate not only sensory information relayed from the MEC but also grid cell patterns, enabling recall of goal location grid patterns from sensory and motivational cues, permitting subsequent planning with only grid representations. We extend a previous theoretical framework for grid-cell-based planning and show that local transition rules can generalize to long-distance path forecasting. We further show that a planning network can sequentially update grid cell states toward the goal. During this process, intermediate grid activity can trigger place cell pattern completion, reconstructing experiences along the planned path. We demonstrate all these effects using a single-layer RNN that simultaneously models the HC-MEC loop and the planning subnetwork. We show that such recurrent mechanisms for grid cell-based planning, with goal recall driven by the place system, make several characteristic, testable predictions.

Abundance of the βAR is canonically regulated by G protein-coupled receptor kinases and β-arrestins, but neither controls constitutive receptor levels, which are dependent on ambient O. Basal βAR expression is instead regulated by the prolyl hydroxylase/pVHL-E3 ubiquitin ligase system, explaining O responsivity.

Individuals with mental health difficulties in Iceland can be detained in police cells as a last resource place of safety when psychiatrists consider patients unsuitable for admission to a ward, for example, due to being under the influence of substances or being too violent. We aimed to investigate if detainment in a police cell affected symptoms of mental illnesses, and subsequently if police cells are an appropriate place of safety for patients in Iceland. We used a mixed methods approach utilising administrative records of detainees' visible symptoms of mental illnesses and ten semi-structured interviews with mental health professionals and police sergeants.

Extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) is a therapeutic intervention for modulating immune responses using an autologous apoptotic cell-based product, known as a photopheresate. The process of generating photopheresates offers attractive possibilities for manipulating distinct leukocyte subsets to either augment or dampen immune responses, depending on the disease context. This review discusses current uses of ECP as a cell-based therapy and introduces possible strategies to enhance the potency of photopheresates.

While the first-line consensus treatment has been based on systemic corticosteroid therapy for many years, ruxolitinib has recently been approved and has become the standard second-line treatment. Fibroin: A Multi-Functional Bio-Derived Binder for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Traditionally, binders such as poly-(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) have been used within lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, but these present environmental and recyclability challenges and have little to no impact on the processes that drive degradation in the cell's chemistry. Ideally, a Li-S battery binder would contribute to the mitigation of the polysulfide shuttle effect and negate the impacts of positive electrode volume expansion while being compatible with aqueous ink preparation and low-energy, low-toxicity recycling processes. In this work, we demonstrate that fibroin, an economical and sustainable biological polymer with an abundance of functional groups, can effectively trap polysulfides while still offering the durability, cyclability, and ease of use offered by the current state-of-the-art binder (PVDF).
