Article Abstract

Lignin is a natural macromolecular within woody plant. Its integrally isolation is a challenging because the conventional preparation causes its dark brown. Herein, we reported a method for extracting light-colored lignin using a mixed solvent of 1,4-dioxane and methanol in acidic conditions, achieved by introducing methoxy groups onto the α‑carbon of lignin side chains via nucleophilic substitution. The reaction declined the condensed structures of the extracted lignin so that the color of the product was light-yellow in the whiteness index of 68.2 (CIELAB color parameters L*, a* and b* values of 73.0, 4.1 and 16.3, respectively). Light-colored lignin can cater to consumer preferences and enhance the acceptability of lignin-based sunscreens. During the extracting, the separated lignin kept very well structurally with high purity (98 % lignin content). The lignin exhibited excellent antioxidant activity and biocompatibility for application in sunscreen. When 4 % of the separated lignin was added to the sunscreen, the color of the lignin-sunscreen was close to the skin tone, and its sun protection factor (SPF) increased from 16 to 40. Incorporating 6 % and 8 % lignin into sunscreens resulted in SPF values of 51 and 61, respectively, demonstrating significant potential for light-colored lignin to partially substitute chemical agents in sunscreens.

Highly efficient conversion of lignin into value-added chemicals and materials is trapped in the inevitable cleavage of β-O-4 linkages and formation of highly condensed structures with deep colors during lignin isolation. Here, we develop a trifunctional choline chloride/glyoxylic acid (ChCl/GA) binary deep eutectic solvent with a π-π conjugate structure and moderate acidity for the fast isolation of light-colored lignin with near proto-structures (exceeding 88% of delignification ratio for 1 hour). The synergetic interaction of GA and ChCl substantially reduced Gibbs free energy of acetal reaction and thoroughly captured reactive intermediates, precisely activating the following key functions: stabilizing β-O-4 linkages, inhibiting condensation reaction, and shielding -OH groups.

In sustainable materials engineering, designing rational and ecologically compatible ultraviolet (UV) protective materials to improve the efficiency of light protection is a major challenge. Sodium lignosulfonate (SL), a renewable biomass derivative possessing inherent UV-blocking and antioxidant properties, has been utilized as a foundational component in this research. Through one-pot synthesis approach, a light-colored sodium lignosulfonate zinc oxide composite (ZnO@SL) was successfully fabricated.

Lignin holds significant potential in UV-blocking and skincare products. However, its application has been hindered by the dark color. Herein, a pink lignin (PL) is successfully extracted from birch under mild condition, with molecular weight and polydispersity index of 4680 Da and 1.

Lignin that has inherent antioxidant and UV absorption capacity can be incorporated with cellulose to prepare functional composite film. However, the dark color and low film-forming ability of industrial lignin limit its application in high-quality transparent films. In this work, ultrasound-assisted formic acid/phenol treatment (uFAPT) was used to extract phenolated and low-condensed lignin from poplar in view of the lignin priority principle.
